Senior Roadway Engineer

ATCS is seeking a Senior Roadway Engineer to join our growing Virginia transportation team. This is a hybrid position based in our Herndon headquarters offering the opportunity to work on high-profile VDOT and municipal roadway projects while helping shape the future of our roadway design practice.

This is an excellent opportunity for a design professional ready to take on greater technical leadership, mentor junior staff, and contribute directly to proposal and business development efforts.

What You'll Do

As a key member of our team, you'll lead and contribute to the planning, design, and delivery of roadway infrastructure projects throughout Virginia. You'll have the opportunity to:

• Lead and produce roadway design plans including geometric design, horizontal/vertical alignments, superelevation, typical sections, and grading for VDOT and municipal roadway/multimodal projects

• Prepare and review construction plan sets, including plan and profile sheets, cross sections, drainage layouts, MOT/TMP plans, and signing and pavement marking plans

• Apply VDOT Road Design Manual (RDM), Road and Bridge Standards, and IIM/LAP requirements to ensure design compliance across state and federally funded projects

• Design to county-specific standards and design manuals for local projects, including Fairfax County (Public Facilities Manual / PFM), Prince William County (Design and Construction Standards Manual), and Loudoun County (Facilities Standards Manual / Design and Construction Standards)

• Prepare design waiver and exception documentation for non-standard design elements in constrained rights-of-way, coordinating across VDOT and local jurisdictional requirements

• Coordinate with subconsultants and multidisciplinary teams (structures, drainage, traffic, environmental, ROW, utilities)

• Manage design schedules, budgets, and deliverables for assigned tasks or project segments

• Support QA/QC reviews and ensure design consistency and accuracy across deliverables

• Interface directly with clients (VDOT, counties, municipalities) during design reviews, public hearings, and field inspections

• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level engineers/designers

• Coordinate with contractors, utility providers, and public agencies

• Participate in public meetings and help drive successful project outcomes

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering

• 6+ years of roadway design experience, preferably in Virginia

• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; candidates licensed in other states will be considered with a commitment to obtain Virginia licensure

• Experience with MicroStation OpenRoads Designer (ORD); Civil 3D experience is a plus

• Knowledge of AASHTO, VDOT, and local design standards and practices

• Demonstrated ability to manage design tasks independently with minimal oversight

• Strong communication, project management, and leadership skills

Our employees are the most critical part of ATCS. For this position, we offer a competitive salary range of $91,000 - $136,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The role is also eligible for an annual bonus, with a target 2% of the employee's annualized salary.
