Reporting to the Manager, Operations Planning, the Engineer, Event Analysis analyzes events affecting system reliability and helps ensure that real-time observations are shared and addressed to support effective operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES). You will assess notable events for reliability issues, provide analysis for AESO compliance activities, and manage communication with internal and external stakeholders.

As part of the Event Analysis team, you will continually monitor system performance, identify performance issues, and draw lessons from real-time events that inform operational readiness and risk management. With a strong data focus, you will integrate and analyze operational information, develop automated monitoring tools, and create traceable evidence that supports defensible compliance assessments.

Your main accountabilities

• Collect, integrate, validate, and analyze high-volume SCADA, PMU, EMS, market, outage, and settlement data to assess asset performance and compliance with applicable ISO rules and Alberta Reliability Standards.
• Translate compliance obligations and operational requirements into measurable data rules, thresholds, indicators, and test logic.
• Design, develop, test, and maintain automated tools, dashboards, and workflows for continuous or scheduled compliance monitoring, exception detection, alerting, and reporting.
• Analyze events, determine root causes, assess reliability and compliance risks, and recommend corrective or preventive actions.
• Create and maintain traceable analysis records, source-data documentation, assumptions, evidence packages, and audit trails that support defensible compliance assessments.
• Collaborate with Operations, Compliance, Information Technology, and generation and transmission facility owners to confirm findings, obtain additional information, and support timely resolution of identified gaps.
• Track trends, recurring exceptions, mitigation commitments, and closure evidence; communicate risks, findings, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders; and continually improve monitoring methods.

What you need – Education and Experience

• A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.
• Professional Engineer designation (P. Eng.) with APEGA.
• 5 years of electric power industry experience, with relevant experience in operations planning, event or disturbance analysis, power-system modelling and analysis, protection and control, customer connections, transmission planning, or engineering economics.
• Working knowledge of SCADA, PMU, EMS, or other operational data sources, together with demonstrated experience in event, disturbance, or root-cause analysis.
• Strong data analytics and automation skills including the use of Python
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to collaborate across functions and explain technical findings to varied audiences.
• Proven ability to solve problems collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders and to share lessons learned.
• Working knowledge of Alberta Reliability Standards, ISO rules, compliance evidence requirements, and the Alberta electricity industry framework.
• Proven ability to solve highly complex engineering problems when objectives are defined but scope and information are incomplete, including in ambiguous and time-sensitive environments.
