Reporting to the Manager, Operations Planning, the Engineer, Remedial Action Scheme (RAS) supports the design, modification, commissioning, operational integration, and ongoing effectiveness of RAS across Alberta. You will work with Operational Planners, Connection Planners, and other technical teams to help ensure RAS are appropriately designed, modelled, documented, and incorporated into AESO planning and operating practices.

You will collaborate across the AESO, including System Planning, System Operations, Project Management, Project Engineering, Regulatory, Legal, and Tariff, and interface with facility owners, generation developers, transmission-connected customers, and consultants. You will provide technical guidance on routine RAS matters and work with the Engineer Specialist, RAS on complex or higher-risk issues.

Your main accountabilities

• Collaborate with Operational Planners, Connection Planners, and other technical teams to develop and modify RAS that address identified system needs and operational requirements.
• Provide technical guidance to internal teams and external stakeholders on the design, application, and operation of RAS, including anti-islanding schemes.
• Coordinate the commissioning, testing, documentation, and operational integration of new and modified RAS to support safe and reliable in-service operation.
• Work with Transmission Facility Owners, Generation Facility Owners, and Distribution Facility Owners to resolve technical and operational matters related to RAS design, implementation, and performance.
• Support project, system planning, operations planning, project engineering, and real-time operations teams throughout the RAS lifecycle.
• Maintain accurate RAS records, databases, technical documentation, and related processes to support planning, operations, compliance, and change management.
• Develop and provide technical input to System Controller procedures and other operational documentation affected by new or modified RAS.
• Support the accurate representation and validation of RAS in the Energy Management System and offline power-system simulation models.
• Monitor and assess the effectiveness of existing RAS and recommend improvements to address performance issues, changing system conditions, or emerging reliability risks.
• Develop and deliver technical training for real-time operators, engineers, and other technical staff involved in the planning or operation of RAS.
• Escalate complex, novel, or higher-risk RAS matters to the RAS Specialist Engineer and contribute technical analysis to support resolution.

What you need – Education and Experience

• A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.
• Professional Engineer designation (P. Eng.) with APEGA.
• 5 years of electric power industry experience, with experience in operations planning, power-system models and analysis, protection and control, customer connections, transmission planning, or engineering economics.
• Working knowledge of the purpose of RAS in planning and its use in operations.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work with diverse team members, from long-term planning to real-time operations.
• Proven ability to solve problems collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Working knowledge of Alberta Reliability Standards, ISO rules, and the Alberta electricity industry framework.
• Proven ability to solve highly complex engineering problems with a defined objective and minimally defined scope in a high-conflict environment.
• Experience mentoring engineers and technical staff.
