    The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.

     ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. West Hartford residents value education, evidenced by the high quality of public and private schools. There is also much to do in West Hartford. There is a wide array of parks and recreation. There are pools and hiking trails. There are historic sites to visit as well. If shopping is on the list, then Blue Back Square, located in the center of town, offers many retail stores and a variety of restaurants to satisfy everyone.

    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    Position:          Staff Interpreter Scheduler, ASD Campus 

    Department:   ASD Campus Interpreting Services Department

    Supervisor:     Manager, ASD Campus Interpreting Services 

    Description:    12 months – Benefits Eligible

    Union Status:  Non-Collective Bargaining (non-union)

    SCOPE OF DUTIES

    The American School for the Deaf is seeking a detail-oriented professional to work as an Interpreting Services Scheduler and Interpreter Trainee. Under the supervision ASD’s Interpreting Manager, the Staff Interpreter Scheduler/Trainee will coordinate interpreting requests and team with certified interpreters in a wide range of assignments.  This position is designed to help prepare the Trainee achieve full RID Certification as an ASL Interpreter. 

    PRIMARY DUTIES

    • Working on various platforms including Microsoft Office, Google, and Zoom for scheduling and interpreting. 
    • Answer phones/emails/VideoPhone calls from requestors and interpreters.
    • Create scheduling assignments in scheduling software. 
    • Relaying information to requestors, staff, and contract interpreters regarding scheduling changes in a timely manner. 
    • Gathering materials for interpreters to use to prepare for interpreting assignments. 
    • Tracking of interpreting data/statistics. 
    • Teaming with certified interpreters in a variety of settings. 
    • Processing payroll and timesheets. 
    • Purchase Order processing.
    • Other related duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Demonstrates honest & ethical conduct.
    • Demonstrates the ability to maintain confidentiality and understands the interpreter scope of practice.   
    • Fluent in American Sign Language. 
    • Able to adapt to fast-paced technology changes within the working environment.   
    • Ability to manage and communicates unanticipated changes throughout the day. 
    • Willingness to work flexible hours.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor’s Degree Required. 
    • Must have successfully passed the RID written exam and be working towards full RID certification. 
    • Valid Driver’s License. 
    • Willing to work flexible hours. 
    • Willing to travel to multiple locations.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS:

    • Group health insurance and other fringe benefits are available.
    • $1000 sign on bonus after one year of service for newly hired employees, not applicable for re-hires.
