    Job description

    Position Summary

    APIC Solutions is seeking a skilled Fire Alarm Technician to join our service and installation team. In this role, you will be responsible for the installation, programming, troubleshooting, testing, inspection, and maintenance of fire alarm systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional environments. This position ensures all work complies with applicable codes, standards (such as NFPA 72), and manufacturer requirements, while maintaining a high standard of quality and customer service. You will work independently and collaboratively with electricians, general contractors, project managers, and customers to deliver reliable fire safety solutions.

    Key Responsibilities

    Installation & Configuration

    • Install conduit, wire, fire alarm panels, initiating devices, notification appliances, and related hardware
    • Program and configure fire alarm systems based on engineered drawings and system requirements
    • Coordinate with electricians, general contractors, and project managers to ensure timely and accurate installations
    • Perform system startup and initial commissioning procedures
    • Ensure proper integration with building infrastructure and other systems

    Service & Troubleshooting

    • Diagnose and repair faults in existing fire alarm systems, including wiring, device, and panel-level issues
    • Replace defective components and update system programming as needed
    • Respond to emergency service calls during and outside of regular business hours as required
    • Perform root cause analysis on system failures and implement preventive measures
    • Maintain service records and document all troubleshooting and repairs

    Inspection & Testing

    • Perform functional and acceptance testing of newly installed or existing fire alarm systems
    • Conduct inspections according to NFPA 72, NEC, IBC, and local AHJ requirements
    • Complete inspection forms, deficiency reports, and customer documentation accurately and promptly
    • Document test results and prepare redline drawings
    • Verify compliance with applicable codes and standards

    Compliance & Safety

    • Ensure that all work complies with NFPA, NEC, IBC, and local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) requirements
    • Follow all safety practices, including proper use of PPE, fall protection, and lockout/tagout procedures
    • Maintain a clean and organized work area and company vehicle
    • Report safety hazards and near-misses to supervisors
    • Stay current on code changes and regulatory updates

    Documentation & Reporting

    • Maintain accurate records of time, work completed, parts used, and materials ordered
    • Complete and submit service reports, test results, and documentation to the office team or supervisor
    • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients, building personnel, and team members
    • Update system documentation and maintain equipment databases
    • Prepare invoices and service documentation for billing purposes

    Customer Service & Communication

    • Interact professionally with clients and building personnel
    • Explain technical findings and recommendations in clear, non-technical language
    • Coordinate service schedules and respond to customer inquiries promptly
    • Build positive customer relationships and represent APIC Solutions professionally
    • Participate in customer training on system operations when needed

    Required Qualifications

    Education & Experience

    • High school diploma or GED required
    • Minimum 2+ years of hands-on experience in fire alarm system installation, service, inspection, or maintenance
    • Demonstrated proficiency with fire alarm systems and components

    Technical Skills

    • Ability to read blueprints, riser diagrams, wiring schematics, and installation manuals
    • Proficient in the use of multimeters, hand tools, and power tools
    • Familiarity with laptop-based programming software and electronic test equipment
    • Strong knowledge of low voltage wiring and code requirements
    • Understanding of fire alarm system architecture and signal flow

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to climb ladders and work safely at heights
    • Comfortable working in ceiling spaces and confined areas
    • Capable of lifting 50+ pounds regularly
    • Ability to work in various environmental conditions
    • Valid driver's license with reliable transportation

    Additional Requirements

    • Willingness to travel to customer sites as required
    • Flexibility for occasional after-hours or on-call work depending on service schedule
    • Ability to pass criminal background checks and drug tests
    • Commitment to safety and compliance practices

    Preferred Qualifications

    • NICET Level I or II in Fire Alarm Systems (or ability to obtain within 6-12 months)
    • Manufacturer training/certification from major systems (Notifier, EST, Fire-Lite, Silent Knight, Siemens, etc.)
    • OSHA 10 certification (OSHA 30 preferred)
    • EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant handling
    • Previous experience with emergency response and service calls
    • Knowledge of BMS (Building Management Systems) integration
    • Experience with networked fire alarm systems and remote monitoring

    Required Software/Systems

    • Fire alarm system programming software (Notifier, EST, Fire-Lite, Silent Knight, Siemens)
    • Multimeter and electronic test equipment
    • Laptop-based diagnostic tools
    • Service management and documentation software
    • Microsoft Office Suite
