    Job description

    St. John Paul II Catholic High School is in search of a part-time drumline group manager to assist the group's musical instructor in running the school's drumline. Ideal candidate will have experience working in music or in percussion, and specifically with the drumline.

    The school fields a 15+ member drumline, that performs at athletic contests (football, volleyball, basketball primarily) and at many school and community events. As the only travelling musical group from the school, the drumline is a valued and important ambassador for the school community. The group is entering their 10th year of entertaining, and has a good foundation on which to build.

    The instructor will lead once weekly rehearsals with the group after school (2 hours), focusing on technique and skill building, and the development of an 8 to 12 cadence repertoire. The manager will attend most practices and will coordinate the travel to and performances at all games, lead any additional rehearsal to perfect cadences (as needed) and will communicate, with direction from the instructor, with students and parents.

Our students are all pointed toward post-secondary education, and desire to be challenged in the classroom and inspired to grow in their faith. We use a Great Books approach in Humanities classes, and offer seventeen AP and dual credit courses. Our teachers must be active Catholics, with a desire and ability to lead young people by example into a deeper communion with our faith.

    Reports to: Principal

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school
    • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
    • Supports and adheres to the policies and procedures of the school and Archdiocese of San Antonio, including the Religious Standards for Catholic School Employees
    • Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters
    • Directs and evaluates the learning experience of the student in both curricular and extracurricular activities
    • Provides guidance to student that promotes his or her welfare and Christian educational development; refers students with problems to those qualified to help
    • Carries out carefully constructed rehearsal plans and maintains documentation of a plan for the year
    • Carries out the disciplinary policies of the school
    • Communicates effectively with students, parents, and other professionals
    • Demonstrates professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits
    • Keeps records of attendance for curriculum credit
    • Supervises arrival and dismissal of students and assists in the supervision of students as needed

    IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Coordinates, with the school office manager, all travel arrangements for performances
    • Attends most drumline rehearsals (with coordination with the drumline instructor)
    • Travels with group, as the staff representative, to all games and performances
    • Coordinates with the athletic director to arrange any TAPPS competitions and needed paperwork
    • With direction from the instructor, sends out a weekly communication to all students and families with a weekly schedule

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church
    • Knowledge of music, music arrangement, and percussion technique
    • Able to manage student behavior
    • Able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form
    • Able to work well with others in a school community
    • Skill in handling multiple tasks simultaneously
    • Skill in job appropriate technology
    • Skill in critical thinking and planning

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Required to work some nights and weekends
    • Required to manage high to moderate levels of stress

    MENTAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Required to lift or carry supplies, textbooks, furniture, and percussion equipment
    • Required to maintain composure and avoid inappropriate displays of anger
    • Required to sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach, grab, pull, hear, see, and speak on a daily basis
    • Required to perform repetitive physical tasks such as computer keyboarding, writing, and reading
    • Required to monitor students in a variety of locations including those with noise, activity, and inclement
