Director of Business Development, Marine Terminal & Port Building Construction

This position may be based anywhere in the United States and requires travel to client meetings, project sites, ports, and industry events as needed.

We are looking for a highly motivated Director of Business Development to join our team and lead growth within the marine terminal and port sector. This role is ideal for an experienced construction professional with 7+ years of experience developing client relationships, expanding market opportunities, and guiding complex Marine related pursuits from initial concept through contract award.

A successful candidate will bring a strong understanding of marine and port construction, including terminals, waterfront facilities, intermodal infrastructure, and related site development. You will build trusted relationships with owners, port authorities, developers, engineering firms, contractors, and other key stakeholders throughout the United States. You should have a proven business-development track record in Marine construction or engineering and the ability to consistently build trust with customers and colleagues alike.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

• Identify, develop, and maintain relationships with port authorities, terminal operators, marine developers, industrial end users, engineering firms, and other industry professionals to generate new business opportunities.
• Build ARCO’s presence and top-of-mind awareness within targeted marine, port, waterfront, and industrial markets.
• Develop and execute a market strategy focused on priority geographies, project types, clients, and long-term growth opportunities.
• Research and analyze economic, infrastructure, transportation, trade, logistics, and industry trends that may influence activity within marine and port markets.
• Monitor upcoming capital programs, public and private development plans, procurements, and project pipelines to identify qualified opportunities early.
• Attend port, marine construction, transportation, logistics, engineering, and industry association events to stay current on market conditions, competition, and client needs while establishing relationships with existing and prospective clients.
• Build relationships with decision makers and influencers, understand their project goals, and position ARCO as a trusted design/build partner.
• Provide ongoing updates to the ARCO management team regarding pipeline development, pursuit strategy, market activity, relationships, and key performance indicators.
• Help develop and manage the execution of the sales plan, including goals, target accounts, opportunity qualification, and pursuit priorities.
• Coordinate and manage the sales and proposal process with ARCO’s marketing, estimating, project management, preconstruction, and senior management teams.
• Collaborate with internal teams to shape project strategies, assess risk, develop value propositions, and deliver compelling proposals for complex marine and port infrastructure projects.
• Support the successful handoff of awarded projects to operations and project management while maintaining strong client relationships throughout delivery.
• Travel as needed to visit clients, project sites, ports, industry events, and regional markets.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree required; Engineering, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Marine Engineering, Design, or a related field is preferred.
• 7+ years of experience in business development, technical sales, preconstruction, project development, or a related role, within marine terminal, port infrastructure, heavy civil Marine adjacent construction, industrial construction, or Marine engineering and design.
• Demonstrated knowledge of marine and port infrastructure projects, construction delivery methods, and the stakeholders involved in complex infrastructure development.
• Established relationships with port authorities, terminal operators, marine developers, industrial end users, engineering firms, contractors, or other relevant decision makers.
• Proven ability to identify opportunities, build profitable relationships, influence decision makers, and convert prospects into clients.
• Experience working with economic development departments, port authorities, public agencies, infrastructure owners, or similar organizations.
• Strong understanding of the design/build process, preconstruction, estimating, proposal development, and project delivery.
• Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, organization, and relationship-management skills.
• Strategic, self-directed, and results-oriented approach with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
• Ability to work effectively in a remote environment with minimal supervision.
• Ability to travel as needed to meet with clients, visit project sites and ports, and attend industry events.
