Position Summary
AO Multispecialty Clinic is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Medical Assistant to join our Radiation Oncology team.
The Radiation Oncology Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support to physicians and the multidisciplinary care team throughout the patient's course of care. This role is responsible for patient preparation, vital signs and clinical measurements, medication reconciliation, clinical documentation, patient flow, and coordination of care.
The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced specialty environment where attention to detail, communication, and compassionate patient care are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Support
- Room and prepare patients for physician visits, follow-up appointments, and on-treatment visits
- Obtain and accurately document vital signs, height, weight, pain scores, and other required clinical measurements
- Obtain relevant patient history and clinical information
- Perform medication and allergy reconciliation and communicate discrepancies to the appropriate clinical team member
- Prepare patients, supplies, and equipment for examinations and office-based procedures
- Assist physicians with examinations and procedures within the Medical Assistant's scope of practice
- Perform approved clinical tasks in accordance with training, competency, physician orders, and organizational policies
- Observe patients for changes in condition and promptly communicate concerns to the appropriate nurse or provider
- Respond appropriately to urgent patient needs and follow established emergency procedures
Radiation Oncology Workflow
- Support efficient patient flow throughout the Radiation Oncology department
- Assist with coordination of consultations, follow-up visits, simulation, treatment planning, and treatment-related appointments
- Prepare patients for Radiation Oncology consultations and on-treatment visits
- Coordinate with Radiation Therapists and other clinical staff to facilitate timely movement of patients through the department
- Recognize and communicate treatment-related concerns reported by patients
- Assist with obtaining outside medical records, imaging, pathology, laboratory results, and other information needed for patient care
- Help ensure required clinical information is available before scheduled appointments
Clinical Documentation
- Accurately and promptly document clinical information within the electronic medical record
- Enter vital signs, medication reconciliation, allergies, screening information, and other required clinical data
- Maintain accurate documentation of patient encounters
- Assist providers with appropriate documentation-related tasks within the Medical Assistant's scope
- Ensure information is appropriately routed to physicians or other clinical team members when review or follow-up is required
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies
Patient Communication & Support
- Provide professional, compassionate, and respectful care to patients and families
- Serve as an effective communication link between patients and the Radiation Oncology team
- Answer routine patient questions within the Medical Assistant's scope of practice
- Direct clinical questions and concerns to the appropriate licensed clinical professional
- Reinforce established instructions regarding appointments, treatment preparation, follow-up, and other clinical needs
- Respond to patient calls and messages according to established departmental workflows
- Communicate changes in symptoms, medication concerns, or other clinically relevant information promptly
Team & Department Support
- Collaborate with Radiation Oncologists, nurses, Radiation Therapists, Medical Physicists, Dosimetrists, front-office staff, and other members of the multidisciplinary team
- Maintain examination rooms and clinical work areas in a clean, safe, organized, and appropriately stocked condition
- Monitor clinical supplies and communicate replenishment needs
- Follow infection prevention, workplace safety, and departmental procedures
- Participate in staff education, competency activities, department meetings, and quality improvement initiatives
- Support an efficient, professional, and patient-centered Radiation Oncology environment
Patient Safety & Escalation
The Radiation Oncology Medical Assistant is expected to recognize and promptly escalate patient concerns that require additional clinical evaluation. These may include significant changes in vital signs, new or worsening symptoms, uncontrolled pain, medication concerns, signs of infection, bleeding, falls or mobility changes, patient distress, or other acute clinical concerns.
The Medical Assistant does not independently diagnose, assess, or provide medical advice outside the individual's scope of practice. Clinical concerns should be promptly communicated to the appropriate nurse, physician, or other licensed clinical professional.
