The Opportunity

Babbage Consultants is a 100% New Zealand-owned multidisciplinary professional services consultancy. We bring together architecture, engineering, planning and environmental expertise across New Zealand and Australia.

We're looking for an Assistant Accountant to join our Auckland Finance team. Reporting to the Financial Controller, you'll take ownership of payroll and a broad range of day-to-day and month-end accounting activities across our New Zealand and Australian businesses.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys variety, takes pride in accurate work and wants to build broader accounting experience. You'll work closely with the Financial Controller, Accounts Assistant and Project Accountants, with exposure to finance activity across both countries.

What You Will Be Doing

• Coordinate payroll across our New Zealand and Australian businesses, ensuring inputs, reconciliations and processing are accurate and completed on time.
• Manage day-to-day accounting processes across receivables, payables, employee expenses, banking and credit control. 
• Support month-end accounting, including journals, accruals, prepayments, intercompany entries, balance sheet reconciliations and an initial review of financial results. 
• Complete GST, tax and other finance reconciliations, maintaining clear and accurate supporting schedules. 
• Investigate discrepancies, maintain sound financial controls and identify practical opportunities to improve finance processes.

What You Will Bring

• Experience in an Assistant Accountant or accounting support role, with exposure to payroll, accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations and month-end accounting.
• Sound knowledge of New Zealand payroll and GST requirements. Australian payroll or accounting experience would be an advantage.
• A relevant accounting or finance qualification, or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong Excel skills and confidence working with accounting and payroll systems.
• Accuracy, sound judgement and the organisation to manage recurring deadlines, investigate discrepancies and communicate clearly, together with integrity when handling confidential information.
