This is a 24-hour per week part-time role, with flexible working arrangements available across Monday to Friday.

Hours can be worked over three full days (e.g. 8 hours per day) or spread across five shorter days, depending on preference and agreement.

A quick look at the role.

The Education and Community Engagement Officer plays a key role in building and maintaining positive relationships with local stakeholders, community groups, schools, subcontractors and residents as part of the Materials Resource Management (MRM) contract. The role focuses on proactive community engagement, education, transparency, and promoting awareness of waste management, recycling, and sustainability initiatives. A key element of the position is delivering engaging site visits and community outreach activities, including school tours and open days, ensuring they are safe, informative, and impactful.

    Your core responsibilities

    • Develop and deliver awareness campaigns and community events to promote recycling, waste reduction, and sustainable behaviours, building strong local partnerships.
    • Organise and deliver educational programmes for schools and community groups in line with the National Curriculum and wider engagement objectives.
    • Plan, manage and host site visits, open days and tours, ensuring activities are safe, engaging, and well-coordinated, including the creation of supporting materials.
    • Act as the first point of contact for community enquiries and complaints, ensuring timely and professional responses, and maintaining accurate communications channels, including the website.
    • Represent the service at stakeholder meetings and lead external communications to strengthen the profile and reputation of the site within the local community.

    Our essential requirements

    • Previous employment experience in a relevant industrial or commercial environment.
    • Good understanding of environmental issues and waste management practices.
    • Knowledge of relevant environmental legislation and compliance requirements.
    • Experience and understanding of social media platforms and their use for communication and engagement purposes.
    • Willingness to undergo a CRB (DBS) disclosure check and undertake some evening working.

And here’s why you’ll love it at Biffa.
