Welding/NDT Supervisor

Position Overview:

The Welding/NDT Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and supporting quality assurance systems, processes, and procedures for new construction, service, and repair work at the Birdon Alabama Shipyard. The Welding/NDT Supervisor will support and assist the QA Manager with developing, executing, and monitoring Shipyard’s quality assurance project plans and production activities. The Welding/NDT Supervisor will directly (or in-directly) support development of contractual inspections, test and trials activities and deliverables as required for each project; develop and enforce good processes and quality assurance within the production activities; and ensure operations are in compliance with the company’s quality system policies and procedures.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Welding/NDT Supervisor is responsible for:

· The continued development and maintenance of shipyard quality assurance policies and procedures in support of new construction, service, and repair efforts.

· Working with the WCC Program to ensure ongoing compliance with USCG Specifications and ABS requirements.

· Providing quality training and tracking the workmanship of all shipyard trades and craft (i.e., writing quality procedures and work instructions, gaining customer and 3rd party written approvals, collecting and storing

objective evidence of inspection and tests, and operating the Quality Management System (QMS) for the shipyard.

· Representing the shipyard during all customer and 3rd party audits and inspections, as well as scheduling and conducting shipyard and vendor quality inspections and audits.

· As a Shipyard Welding Coordinator, maintaining the Welding and NDT Management Program, to include WPS/PQRs, WQRs, NDE Procedures, Inspector Records, Visual Acuity checks and continuity. This includes running written, oral, and practical tests for new hires and where advancement opportunities arise.

· Work with Program Management to ensure local quality assurance teams are continually trained, developed, and mentored.

· Ensuring the organization continues to develop quality standards, by establishing and implementing quality assurance policies and procedures, and acting as the responsible manager for QMS change management, material receiving inspections, non-conformance and corrective action tracking, calibration of measurement and testing devices, inspection and test plans, and manufacturer’s data books.

· Working with stakeholders to develop quality metrics and targets to ensure scheduled delivery of all product quality deliverables is achieved.

· Maintain and improve product quality by completing product, company, system, compliance, and surveillance audits; investigating customer complaints; collaborating with other members of management to develop new product and engineering designs and manufacturing and training methods.

· Lead, participate in, and contribute to process/quality improvement teams and/or initiatives. Identify and recommend improvements to production/work instruction practices or materials which lead to positive results in product quality and process improvements/efficiency.

· Assist in building and managing the Shipyard Quality Department consisting of structural, piping, electrical, coating/covering, dimensional control, and document control inspectors and surveyors.

· Comply with and enforce standard company policies and procedures.

Qualifications / Skills / Experience

· AWS Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) with 5 years of experience. College degree a plus.

· ASNT Level II Certified Visual, Dye Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, and Ultrasonic Inspector.

· 10+ years in the shipyard industry preferred.

· Knowledgeable in systems engineering concepts for mechanical, HVAC, electrical, and electronic installations, dimensional control, and follow-on inspections or testing.

· Knowledgeable in blasting, coating, and surface coverings/insulation installation and testing.

· Must be able to read blueprints, plan quality work efforts, and manage project personnel, equipment, and tooling.

· Must be able to address customer and vendor concerns orally and in writing.

· Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

· Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, squat or kneel regularly, as well as climb stairs and ladders and enter confined spaces to complete tasks.

· Demonstrated skills and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office required.

· Must have a valid Driver’s License.

· Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

Relationships

This position is based in Bayou La Batre, AL and will report to the QA Manager. Birdon’s senior management team, including Divisional Managers, may provide additional direction and duties from time to time.

Clear communication and interpersonal skills are necessary as direct contact with Birdon clients, prospective clients, and production team is an important aspect of this position. Working Conditions

· Position requires use of computer, telephones, and other office equipment, reading, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening, and hearing ability and visual acuity.

· Domestic travel will be a requirement for the role.

· Position requires ability to work in a manufacturing environment where dust, fume and airborne particles, temperature extremes and elevated noise levels exist.Position requires use of computer, telephones, and other office equipment, reading, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening, hearing ability, and visual acuity.

· Travel ~ 5%.
