Job Summary

The Calgary Film Commissioner is responsible for attracting and retaining screen-based production to the Calgary region. Acting as the lead business development manager for the Calgary Film Commission, the role promotes Calgary as the production location of choice to industry decision-makers while cultivating strategic partnerships that support production attraction, industry growth, and economic impact.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development

• Build and implement the strategy to identify, pursue, and develop production-attraction opportunities.
• Build and maintain relationships with producers, studios, streamers, production executives, and industry decision-makers.
• Promote Calgary’s competitive advantages through targeted business-development activities, market visits, and industry outreach.
• Develop and deliver presentations, proposals, pitch materials, and attraction-related information packages. 
• Connect prospective productions with local industry resources, infrastructure, service providers, and stakeholders.
• Monitor industry trends, market activity, and competing jurisdictions to identify opportunities and risks.
• Grow and maintain an active pipeline of opportunities and prospective productions through HubSpot CRM and related systems.
• Collaborate with the Creative Industries team to ensure attraction opportunities transition effectively into Film Commission service delivery.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Collaborate with government partners, industry organizations, post-secondary institutions and regional stakeholders on attraction and sector-development initiatives.
• Participate in industry conferences, festivals, trade events, networking activities, panels, and speaking engagements. 
• Support strategic relationship development with rural municipalities in collaboration with the Creative Industries team.
• Act the primary spokesperson for Film Commission related media engagement.
• Support attraction-focused marketing initiatives and development of promotional materials.
• Promote Calgary’s production capabilities, infrastructure, talent base, and industry successes.
• Ensure a deep understanding of provincial incentives, while understanding the competitive incentive landscape

Strategic Planning

• Manage allocated business-development budgets and attraction-related expenditures.
• Contribute to funding opportunities, sponsorship initiatives, and attraction-related proposals.
• Track attraction performance metrics, pipeline activity, economic-impact indicators, and business-development outcomes.
• Maintain accurate opportunity information within CRM systems.
• Support reporting requirements for leadership, Board reporting, and funding partners.
• Evaluate attraction initiatives and provide recommendations regarding future investments and opportunities.

Education

Post-secondary education in Business, Marketing, Communications, Film Studies, Commerce, Economic Development, International Relations, or a related field is preferred.

Experience

Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in film, television, business development, production, investment attraction, destination marketing, or related industries.

Assets:

• Existing industry relationships.
• Experience working with government and economic-development organizations.
• Understanding of municipal, provincial, national, and international production environments.
• Experience representing jurisdictions or industry sectors
