    Job description

    About Cardiff

Cardiff provides financing to small businesses. Since 2004, we have funded more than $12 billion for businesses across the country, including companies in logistics, healthcare, construction, and professional services. We pair underwriting technology with responsive, human support because our customers need fast access to capital and clear, well-reasoned decisions.

    Title: Senior Underwriter

    Location: Remote (U.S.)

    Employment Type: Full-time

    Department: Operations

    Reports to: Operations Manager

    The role

As a Senior Underwriter, you will evaluate working capital loan and merchant cash advance applications, make sound funding decisions, and help Cardiff grow responsibly. You will balance speed with disciplined risk assessment, explain decisions clearly, and work closely with Sales and Operations to move qualified applications through the process.

    What you will own

    • Manage a high-volume underwriting pipeline while maintaining accuracy, consistency, and timely decision-making.
    • Analyze business financials, bank statements, credit reports, and other supporting documentation to assess creditworthiness and repayment risk.
    • Approve, decline, or structure funding requests in accordance with Cardiff's underwriting guidelines and risk standards.
    • Identify material risks, inconsistencies, and missing information, and document the rationale for each decision.
    • Partner with Sales and Operations to resolve questions, obtain required documentation, and support a smooth applicant experience.
    • Provide underwriting guidance and financial insight to internal partners while maintaining independent credit judgment.
    • Stay current on market conditions, portfolio trends, and regulatory developments that may affect working capital lending and merchant cash advance products.

    What you bring

    • At least three years of underwriting experience with working capital loan or merchant cash advance products.
    • A bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or a related field.
    • Strong financial analysis, risk assessment, and decision-making skills.
    • Experience reviewing financial statements, bank statements, and credit reports.
    • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex credit decisions to nontechnical partners.
    • Proficiency with financial analysis tools and underwriting systems.
    • The ability to work independently in a remote environment, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines.

    How you work

    • You make timely decisions without sacrificing the quality of your analysis.
    • You apply sound judgment consistently and know when an application requires additional review or escalation.
    • You communicate questions, decisions, and risks directly and respectfully.
    • You stay organized in a high-volume environment and keep application status and decision notes current.
    • You collaborate well with Sales and Operations while maintaining objective underwriting standards.
    • You adapt to changing priorities and look for practical ways to improve underwriting quality and efficiency.

This role may not be a fit if you

    • Prefer a low-volume environment with limited time-sensitive decision-making.
    • Are uncomfortable making independent credit decisions or documenting the reasoning behind them.
    • Prioritize speed at the expense of accuracy, risk controls, or underwriting guidelines.
    • Need highly prescriptive direction to manage your daily workflow.
    • Have difficulty adjusting when business priorities, market conditions, or risk considerations change.

    Compensation and benefits

    • $80,000 base salary, plus a performance bonus tied to delivery and business outcomes.
    • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
    • 401(k) plan.
    • Flexible PTO and observed holidays.
    • Remote-first work environment with support for your home-office setup.
