This position supports the mission and work of the Y by providing on-deck leadership for the gymnastics program, coaching athletes across pre-team and competitive levels using USA Gymnastics progressions. Plans and leads practices and meet preparation, mentors coaching staff, partners with families, and ensures a safe, inclusive environment aligned with YMCA policies and Association standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Model the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with athletes, families, staff, and volunteers.
- Plan practice cycles and daily training across vault, bars, beam, and floor; use USAG progressions and effective spotting to advance skills safely.
- Lead meet planning and logistics (home/away), including schedules, rosters, travel details, and session assignments; coordinate with Parents Club as appropriate.
- Evaluate athlete placement and readiness; track attendance, scores, and progress; communicate goals and expectations to athletes and families.
- Maintain equipment readiness and training spaces; complete/oversee routine apparatus inspections and report maintenance needs promptly.
- Mentor and direct assistant coaches and instructors to ensure consistent teaching standards, safety practices, and positive team culture.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to incidents/emergencies; complete required documentation; instruct participants in emergency procedures.
- Follow YMCA policies, emergency procedures, and mandated reporting/abuse-prevention protocols.
- Participate in required meetings, trainings, and Association events; represent the YMCA positively in league/meet communications.
- Minimum age 21 with four (4)+ years’ experience coaching competitive gymnastics (head or assistant coach).
- Demonstrated ability to teach and spot compulsory/optional skills (Levels 3–7 required; Level 8–10 preferred).
- Strong organization, planning, and customer-service skills; ability to lead staff and communicate effectively with athletes and families.
- Professional Membership with USA Gymnastics (or obtained per Association timeline), USAG background check, and U101: Safety & Risk Management. Current CPR/AED and First Aid (or within Association timeframe).
