This position supports the mission and work of the Y by delivering safe, progressive gymnastics instruction for beginner-to-advanced recreational and pre-team athletes. Plans and leads classes across multiple events using USA Gymnastics progressions, provides appropriate spotting, mentors entry-level instructors, and partners with families to ensure an inclusive, goal-focused experience aligned with YMCA policies and standards.
Essential Functions:
- Model the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with athletes, families, and staff.
- Plan and lead class segments across floor, bars, beam, and vault; teach progressions and provide safe, effective spotting within training guidelines.
- Assess readiness and advance participants appropriately; reinforce rules and safety expectations; prepare athletes for skills checks, showcases, and pre-team/meet experiences as assigned.
- Set up/break down equipment; complete routine equipment checks; maintain clean, organized, and safe training spaces.
- Communicate clearly with parents/guardians about progress, expectations, schedules, and opportunities.
- Support clinics/special events and help orient/coach Gymnastics Instructor 1 staff to ensure consistent teaching standards.
- Complete accurate attendance and incident/accident documentation as required.
- Follow YMCA policies, emergency procedures, and mandated reporting/abuse-prevention protocols.
- One (1)+ year of recreational or pre-team coaching experience required; two (2)+ years and multi-event spotting proficiency preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of USA Gymnastics progressions, safety standards, and effective class management.
- Positive role model with strong communication and relationship-building skills; able to motivate diverse age/skill levels.
- Current CPR/AED/First Aid (or ability to obtain within Association timeframe). USAG Instructor Membership may be required based on assignment.
- Must meet Association and state/league requirements for background checks and required trainings.
