Finance Team Overview

Finance underpins char.gy’s ability to grow with confidence. We produce the numbers, keep cash management, financial operations and reporting accurate and on time, and turn financial data into insight that influences decisions at the Board level and throughout the business. As char.gy scales towards a nationwide charging network, this team is building the financial that will get us there.

The Finance Manager is central to the success of the Finance Team, taking ownership of financial operations and reporting.

Position Overview

You will play a pivotal role in the delivery and oversight of char.gy's financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance and control across all areas of financial management. Reporting to the Head of Finance, this is a hands-on role which owns the month-end close, statutory reporting, tax compliance and internal controls, bringing technical rigour to the function while driving process improvement as the business scales.

The role line manages the Accountant and Finance Assistant, providing day-to-day leadership and supporting their development. You will work closely with the Head of Finance, external auditors and advisers, and stakeholders across the business to ensure robust financial control as char.gy grows.

The Finance Manager will:

• Own and sign off the month-end close process, driving continuous improvement.
• Manage and support the development of the Accountant and Finance Assistant.
• Lead the preparation of annual statutory accounts and manage the external audit end-to-end.
• Own the purchase-to-pay process and oversee the revenue ledger, ensuring accurate billing and cash management.
• Manage VAT, CIS and other HMRC tax compliance obligations.
• Act as system administrator, driving process and reporting improvements.
• Develop and monitor internal controls safeguarding char.gy's assets and reporting accuracy.
• Provide financial analysis to support business performance and assist with wider finance projects.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Operations & Close

• Own and sign off the month-end close process, pushing for constant improvement.
• Manage the Accountant and Finance Assistant, supporting their development.
• Ensure accurate preparation of month-end financials, balance sheet reconciliations, and management of the general ledger.
• Review and approve all journals and postings before figures are locked at month-end.
• Maintain and manage tangible and intangible fixed asset registers, depreciation postings, and capitalisation decisions.
• Oversee inventory management and reconciliation to stock system, including chargepoint and installation reconciliations.
• Oversee finance management of payroll, pensions, and employee benefits.
• Ensure LEVI grant funding proceeds are collected in accordance with contractual terms along with the necessary reporting.

Reporting & Control

• Lead the preparation of annual statutory accounts for Head of Finance review.
• Manage the external audit end-to-end, acting as primary point of contact, coordinate audit schedules, prepare audit packs, and resolve queries to ensure timely and clean completion.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards.
• Provide inputs to investor and shareholder reporting as required.
• Work with external accountants to ensure contracts are reported in line with the relevant accounting standards, including revenue recognition across char.gy's portfolio of charging contracts.
• Monitor and implement new and emerging accounting standards, ensuring char.gy's policies and financial statements remain compliant.
• Track and implement recommendations from the external audit management letter, ensuring actions are assigned and closed on time.
• Oversee bank account management, mandates, and bank reconciliations, ensuring cash accuracy.
• Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard char.gy assets and ensure accuracy in financial reporting.

Expenditure & Revenue Management

• Own the purchase-to-pay process end-to-end, from purchase order management through to invoice processing, payment runs, and reconciliation.
• Maintain and review delegated approval flows, ensuring all expenditure is authorised in line with the company's authority matrix.
• Oversee employee expense and corporate card processes, ensuring compliance with policy and timely processing.
• Oversee the revenue ledger, including reconciliation to backend systems, accounts receivable, ensuring completeness and accuracy of billing across all contract types.
• Take ownership of revenue share calculation, recognition, and settlement to council partners.

Tax & Compliance

• Prepare and submit quarterly VAT returns.
• Manage CIS monthly reporting and HMRC submissions.
• Coordinate corporation tax and R&D tax relief filings with external advisers.
• Ensure all HMRC obligations are met on time and accurately.

Systems & Process

• Act as system administrator; own configuration, drive optimisation, and develop the system to support a faster close and improved reporting.
• Identify and implement process improvements across financial operations.
• Maintain and develop finance procedures and documentation.

Supporting the Business

• Provide financial analysis to support business performance.
• Assist with wider finance projects and initiatives.
• Highlight risks and opportunities impacting margins.

Person Specification

Essential

• Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
• Proven experience as a line manager.
• Strong audit management experience, coordinating and owning the external audit process.
• Strong technical knowledge across financial reporting, tax compliance, and internal controls.
• Experience of finance system improvement, development, or implementation.
• Proven ability to operate in a fast-paced, scale-up or high-growth environment, with an analytical, continuous improvement mindset.

Desirable

• Experience in infrastructure, EV, energy, or another capital-intensive sector.
• Experience in a PE or VC-backed business.
• Investor reporting experience.
