    Job description

    The Salem Fire-EMS Department is seeking dedicated and skilled Part-Time EMT to serve within our dynamic 911 system. Operating in a high-volume emergency response system, you will provide quality pre-hospital care and transportation to the citizens and visitors of Salem.

    Our system benefits from short transport times to region-leading Level I and Level II trauma-capable hospitals, as well as a strong operational backbone featuring dedicated EMS supervision and ALS-equipped engine crews available to assist on critical calls.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Attendant-in-Charge (AIC): Participate in patient care delivery on an advanced life support capable ambualnces, asssiting in patient assessment, treatment, and transport decision-making.

    • System Collaboration: Coordinate effectively with on-scene fire crews, ALS engine personnel, EMS supervisors, and receiving hospital personnel.

    • Documentation: Complete thorough, accurate, and timely Electronic Patient Care Reports (ePCR) adhering to state, regional, and department standards.

    • Operational Readiness: Ensure response vehicles and medical equipment are fully stocked, operational, and clean at the start and end of every shift.

    Shift & Schedule Requirements

    • Hours: 12 to 24 hours per week.

    • Availability: Shifts are scheduled across a 24/7/365 operational model, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Flexibility is required to meet department operational needs.

    Qualification Requirements

    A valid driver's license from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Certification as a EMT or AEMT, or have the ability to gain reciprocity as a EMT or AEMT in Virginia.   

    Special Requirements

    Must meet and maintain all department, State and National training requirements for position.

    Education & Experience

    High school diploma or equivalent; Virginia EMT or AEMT certification, or have the ability to gain reciprocity in Virginia.  Valid Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) Level II certification.

    Preferred applicants have certifications in BLS.  

    Prefer applicants have three (3) or more years of experience in a busy 911 pre-hospital system.  

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques and equipment required for performing emergency medical treatment; general knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate orally and in writing through the electronic patient care reporting system; ability to understand and maintain effective working relationships with fellow associates and the general public; possession of physical endurance and agility.

    Physical Requirements

    Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard. Requires the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
