Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements is an AmeriCorps Program which provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting the conservation of natural areas. Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve (JELA) was established in 1978 to protect and share the nature, culture, and history of South Louisiana. As one of six JELA sites, Barataria Preserve consists of more than 26,000 acres of wild Louisiana wetlands, including hardwood forest, swamp, bayous, and marshes Stewards, in partnership with JELA - Barataria Preserve, are seeking an AmeriCorps member who will support the rapid expansion of off-site educational programming for area schools. This position helps connect thousands of students - especially those from underserved communities - to the National Park Service through hands-on science, cultural heritage learning, and stewardship activities.
The Citizen Science Coordinator is an AmeriCorps position that will develop and deliver curriculum-based programs, support community outreach, and strengthen partnerships with educators. The AmeriCorps member will also help organize events, develop social media strategy, speak and lead programming, conduct student and teacher evaluations, and learn about the National Park Service mission and operations. The member and student participants will learn about water quality, migratory birds, exotic species, and other cultural, economic, and ecological stewardship concerns. The Citizen Science Coordinator will present programming in local elementary and high schools that address issues such as natural area stewardship, wildlife habitat restoration and protection, and opportunities with the National Park Service.

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps volunteer, performance will be evaluated on whether the volunteer has completed the required number of hours, the volunteer has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the volunteer has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
