Delta Eats – Garden Coordinator
Reports to Manager of Early Childhood of Leflore Promise Community
The Delta Eats Garden Coordinator will provide hands-on oversight of school and community garden operations at designated Delta Eats sites, including elementary schools, community gardens, and culinary arts production spaces. This individual will support the planning, installation, maintenance, and expansion of educational and production gardens while ensuring adequate access to program services, promotion of activities, and coordination with culinary arts and agricultural learning initiatives.
This position will also lead efforts to establish and maintain a production garden that supports culinary arts classes, student workforce development, nutrition education, and farm-to-table learning opportunities.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Community Food Systems, Agriculture, Horticulture, Environmental Health, Public Health, Food Science, Education, or related degree preferred.
- Three (3) years of related experience in gardening, agriculture, landscaping, greenhouse management, or youth agricultural programming.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently toward goals and timelines.
- Ability to perform outdoor physical labor in varying weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Planning, installing, maintaining, and expanding GLCSD school gardens and DHA-led community gardens.
- Lead the development and maintenance of a production garden for culinary arts and workforce development programs.
- Develop garden project scope, goals, timelines, and deliverables with assistance from department leadership.
- Coordinate seasonal planting schedules, harvesting activities, irrigation, composting, and garden upkeep.
- Assist with integrating gardening, agriculture, nutrition, and culinary arts into educational programming.
- Support hands-on student learning opportunities related to food systems, sustainability, and healthy eating.
- Research and recommend best practices related to school gardens, food production, and agricultural education.
- Maintain garden tools, supplies, equipment, and inventory.
- Represent the DHA in community activities and develop positive working relationships with DHA partners, schools, and volunteers.
- Conduct reviews of projects by gathering and analyzing information, developing written summaries of issues, proposing recommendations, and developing plans for problem resolution.
- Use reporting systems to evaluate program outcomes and garden productivity.
- Identify additional collaborative opportunities with DHA partners and community organizations.
- Present reports on garden progress, harvest data, and program activities to stakeholders.
- Assist with supervising interns, volunteers, summer workers, and student participants.
- Support community outreach activities, workshops, and garden engagement events.
- Other duties as assigned.
