Secondary Design Engineer

The Opportunity

Downer’s Energy & Utilities business is seeking an Electrical Engineer, Secondary Systems to join our Power engineering team.

In this role, you will contribute to the design and delivery of secondary systems for high-voltage substations, producing accurate engineering designs, models, reports, settings and technical documentation. Working closely with the Principal Engineer, project teams, clients, subcontractors and suppliers, you will help deliver high-quality design packages that meet project, safety, quality, budget and schedule requirements.

This is an excellent opportunity for an electrical engineer with substation experience who wants to strengthen their technical capability, contribute to major power infrastructure projects and progress towards leading an engineering design team

What we are looking for 

• Qualification Electrical Engineering
• Five years’ experience in substation electrical engineering & RPEQ accredited  
• Knowledge of high-voltage substation design, layouts and transmission and distribution network components
• Understanding of secondary protection and automation systems, including protection IEDs, SCADA control and monitoring, transformer monitoring and control, and AC and DC supply systems
• The ability to develop, read and design single-line diagrams, logic diagrams, electrical schematics, panel layouts and cable schedules
• Experience preparing comprehensive design packages, technical documents and drawing registers
• An understanding of quality assurance processes throughout the project lifecycle
• Experience with electrical CAD software such as Bentley MicroStation or Autodesk AutoCAD
• Awareness of electrical engineering software such as PowerFactory and PSCAD
• Strong communication, organisation and time-management skills
• The ability to build effective relationships with internal teams, clients, stakeholders and subcontractors
• Thorough attention to detail and the ability to work effectively in a changing project environment
• Leadership aspirations and an interest in progressing towards leading an engineering design team
