Desktop & Infrastructure Support Engineer

We’re looking for a Desktop & Infrastructure Support Engineer to join our team in Edinburgh, supporting a secure and important client environment.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll provide day-to-day desktop support while also getting involved in wider infrastructure activities. You’ll work across laptops, desktops, VDI and server environments, helping to troubleshoot issues, maintain systems and contribute to infrastructure projects and improvements.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys solving technical problems and working directly with users, but who also has an interest in what’s happening behind the scenes across the wider infrastructure. You’ll have the opportunity to work with a range of Microsoft technologies and enterprise tools, build your technical knowledge and develop your career within a large technology organisation.

Due to the nature of the client environment, eligibility for security clearance is required for this role. To meet the current security requirements, candidates must be sole UK nationals and have lived and worked continuously in the UK for the past five years. Unfortunately, we are unable to consider dual nationals for this position.

What you’ll be doing

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

• Providing technical support across desktop and infrastructure services, responding to issues and helping users resolve technical problems.
• Working as part of a support team handling calls and incidents across laptops, desktops, VDI and server environments.
• Diagnosing and troubleshooting desktop and infrastructure issues, taking ownership where possible and escalating to the appropriate teams when required.
• Supporting the installation, configuration, maintenance and deployment of desktop and infrastructure technologies.
• Working with Microsoft SCCM and supporting operating system and application deployment.
• Supporting technologies including Microsoft Entra, Azure and Intune.
• Working with Trellix ePO and client-side agents as part of the wider security and endpoint environment.
• Monitoring desktop and infrastructure systems, identifying issues and helping to maintain optimal performance and availability.
• Contributing to infrastructure projects, deployments, upgrades and other technical activities, gaining hands-on experience across the wider environment.
• Working closely with infrastructure and technical teams to improve efficiency and resolve more complex technical challenges.
• Supporting the development and maintenance of technical documentation, including incident reports, configuration details and support information.
• Keeping accurate records of incidents, equipment, changes and technical activities.
• Following established processes, security requirements and best practices when delivering both desktop and infrastructure support.
• Identifying recurring issues and opportunities to improve the service and user experience.
• Continuing to develop your technical knowledge and keeping up to date with relevant technologies and industry practices.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone with a solid technical background who enjoys hands-on support and wants to work across both desktop and infrastructure technologies.

You’ll ideally have:

• Proven experience working in desktop support, infrastructure support or a similar technical environment.
• Experience providing technical support across desktop and infrastructure technologies.
• Experience supporting laptops, desktops, VDI and/or servers.
• Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work through technical issues logically and take ownership of problems.
• Experience with Microsoft SCCM and operating system/application deployment.
• Knowledge or experience of Microsoft Entra, Azure and Intune.
• Experience with Trellix ePO and client-side agents would be beneficial.
• A good understanding of common IT hardware, software, networking and infrastructure concepts.
• Experience supporting users and working collaboratively with wider technical teams.
• Good communication skills and a customer-focused approach.
• The ability to work independently while also being a collaborative member of the wider team.
• Good attention to detail, particularly when recording incidents, documenting technical information and following established processes.
• A willingness to learn new technologies and broaden your infrastructure knowledge.
• An understanding of the importance of security and following established procedures, particularly when working within a secure environment.

A degree in a relevant subject or equivalent experience would be beneficial.

Relevant IT qualifications or certifications, such as CompTIA A+, Microsoft 365, AWS Cloud Practitioner or similar, are also welcome but are not essential.

You don’t need to be an expert in every technology listed above. What’s important is that you have a strong technical foundation, enjoy getting to the bottom of problems and are keen to develop your knowledge across both desktop and infrastructure.

You’ll be comfortable working directly with users while also understanding that good support often means looking beyond the immediate issue and considering the wider infrastructure.
