    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the general direction of the Director of Nursing and Clinical Services, the Registered Nurse Staff will lead the nursing team on all hospital units, accept responsibility for and provide direct and indirect patient care; supervise and provide direction of subordinates in accordance with TJC, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Communicates with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality. The position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

    STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

    1. Ensures adherence to proper infection control, OSHA and safety standards.

    2. Will initiate the nursing assessment and perform ongoing assessment in collaboration with other health team members in a timely manner.

    3. Interprets assessment data correctly and derives information for nursing needs, i.e., care plan and nurses’ notes.

    4. Assigns appropriate personnel to provide the patient with continuous quality care.

    5. Initiates the care plan after completion of the assessment.

    6. Formulate appropriate and measurable goals.

    7. Updates the care plan daily and communicates it to appropriate personnel.

    8. Delivers care to the patient that communicates patient worth.

    9. Reduces patient anxiety through calm manner and explanation of procedures to patient.

    10. Assists in meeting daily hygiene needs of patient.

    11. Supervises and assists with care of pre-op patient (proper dress, pre-op voiding, completion of chart, and pre-medication).

    12. Identifies physical symptoms, physical changes and reports to charge nurse and/or physician.

    13. Administers medications and treatments according to established policies and procedures.

    14. Involves patient and if appropriate, patient’s family in care and plan of care.

    15. Observes, responds, and charts to behavioral and physiological changes due to medications.

    16. Charts all medications when given and documents missed doses.

    17. Uses medical and surgical asepsis in all aspects of care.

    18. Demonstrates the ability and knowledge of nursing equipment to safely deliver patient care.

    19. Promotes independence in patients or assists to accept dependent status.

    20. Directs or participates in actions to meet hydration, nutritional and elimination needs.

    21. Prepares patient for ordered procedures, lab, x-ray, surgery, treatment, etc.

    22. Assists physician on rounds.

    23. Administers IV fluids and blood products according to hospital policy.

    24. Provides for mental and social stimulation on the basis of patient potential.

    25. Reviews home care instruction with patient prior to discharge as evidenced by documentation.

    26. Collect and organize data in a systemic manner.

    27. Refers patient to other health care team members as needed.

    28. Makes relevant observations of conditions, symptoms and reactions and charts, reports this information appropriately.

    29. Uses appropriate nursing judgment in delivering care and in emergency situations.

    30. Identifies patient teaching needs, patient ability to learn and plans teaching needs based on patient/family knowledge and ability.

    31. Initiates and maintains administrative and nursing records that are clear, concise, complete and signed.

    32. Participates in continuing education and in in-services.

    33. Participates on assigned committees.

    34. Provides direct and indirect patient care.

    35. Other duties as needed, required, requested or assigned.
