    Job description

Systems Engineer – Industrial Control and Communications Systems based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The role is responsible for the design, integration, commissioning, operation, and troubleshooting of industrial control, automation, and communication systems supporting mission-critical infrastructure environments. The position provides technical leadership across multidisciplinary engineering teams involved in complex control and communications implementations.

The scope includes industrial automation platforms, communication networks, fiber optic infrastructure, system integration, testing, and operational support throughout the project lifecycle. Responsibilities encompass architecture reviews, communications validation, network resilience assessments, FAT/SAT execution, commissioning activities, and operational readiness verification for critical infrastructure projects.

The ideal candidate is an Electrical Engineer with a minimum of eight years of experience delivering complex infrastructure systems where availability, reliability, redundancy, and operational continuity are essential. Experience within transportation, airports, utilities, power, industrial manufacturing, rail, or oil and gas sectors is highly desirable.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Review and validate system architecture designs for industrial control, automation, and communications systems supporting mission-critical infrastructure.
    • Perform systems integration activities involving SCADA, DCS, PLC, HMI, IEDs, remote I/O devices, sensors, actuators, and communication gateways.
    • Assess and verify industrial communication networks utilizing Ethernet-based architectures and protocols including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, OPC UA, Profinet, Profibus, DNP3, and IEC 61850.
    • Support design validation and troubleshooting of fiber optic communication systems, including single-mode and multi-mode networks, OTDR testing, diagnostics, and fault isolation.
    • Evaluate network resilience and redundancy strategies, including redundant fiber rings, automatic failover mechanisms, fault tolerance, and communication continuity.
    • Review and verify control logic, alarm management, event handling, feedback systems, data acquisition, and automated operational response functions.
    • Coordinate interface management activities to ensure interoperability between multidisciplinary systems and communication infrastructures.
    • Execute and support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), integrated system testing, commissioning, and operational readiness activities.
    • Conduct root cause analysis, system diagnostics, and troubleshooting of complex automation, integration, and communication issues.
    • Perform reliability engineering and maintainability assessments to improve operational performance and long-term system effectiveness.
    • Review implementation of OT cybersecurity controls, secure network architecture, system hardening requirements, and user access management practices.
    • Provide technical leadership throughout design review, implementation, validation, commissioning, and operational support phases.

    Required

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
    • Minimum 8 years of experience in industrial control systems, automation systems, and communications infrastructure.
    • Demonstrated experience with Industrial Control Systems (ICS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), and related automation platforms.
    • Experience with industrial communication protocols including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, OPC UA, Profinet, Profibus, DNP3, and IEC 61850.
    • Practical experience with fiber optic communication systems, including single-mode and multi-mode networks, optical distribution systems, fusion splicing, OTDR testing, network diagnostics, and fault isolation.
    • Knowledge of high-availability and redundant communication architectures supporting continuous operation of critical systems.
    • Experience with real-time monitoring, alarms, event management, system diagnostics, data acquisition, and feedback control systems.
    • Experience integrating intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), sensors, actuators, remote I/O devices, communication gateways, and supervisory control platforms.
    • Knowledge of Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity principles, secure network architecture, user access management, and system hardening practices.
    • Demonstrated experience working on complex infrastructure projects where system availability, reliability, redundancy, and operational continuity are essential.
    • Proven ability to independently review communication and control strategies, assess network resilience, resolve integration challenges, and coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces.

    Assets

    • Experience supporting airport infrastructure projects.
    • Experience within transportation, transit, rail, or utility environments.
    • Experience with power distribution or energy infrastructure systems.
    • Experience supporting industrial manufacturing operations.
    • Experience within oil and gas facilities.
    • Knowledge of asset lifecycle management methodologies.
    • Exposure to critical infrastructure operations and maintenance environments.
    • Experience supporting brownfield modernization or system upgrade programs.
