The Singapore-ETH Centre was established in 2010 by ETH Zurich - The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF), as part of the NRF’s CREATE campus. As ETH Zurich's only research centre outside of Switzerland, the centre has strengthened the research capacity of ETH Zurich to develop sustainable solutions to global challenges in Switzerland, Singapore and the surrounding regions.
Set in Asia, in a rapidly urbanising region, the Singapore-ETH Centre aims to provide practical solutions to some of the most pressing challenges on urban sustainability, resilience and health through its programmes: Future Cities Lab Global (FCL Global) and Future Health Technologies (FHT).
The centre serves as an intellectual hub for research, bringing together principal investigators and researchers from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. To promote the exchange of ideas and expertise, our researchers actively collaborate with universities and research institutes and engage with industry and government agencies to translate knowledge to practical solutions to real-world problems.
Fracture risk assessment today relies mainly on areal bone mineral density (DXA) which has limited discriminative power and lose accuracy over longer follow-up periods. Hip fractures carry the highest socioeconomic burden among osteoporotic fractures, yet they remain assessed largely from bone fragility alone, without properly accounting for fall biomechanics.
Our group's simulation-based models capture how bone strength and fall mechanics combine to determine an individual's hip fracture risk, offering a more personalised picture than bone density alone. However, these simulations are computationally expensive, making them clinically impractical at scale. The solution lies in image-based, data-driven (AI) models that learn to predict personalised fracture risk directly from routine bone-density or CT scans in seconds.
This PhD project will build and validate such AI models, extending them from single-timepoint prediction to longitudinal, personalised fracture-risk trajectories using repeat imaging. The successful candidate will therefore be working primarily as an AI/image-processing researcher, developing deep-learning models for medical images.
The PhD candidate will be embedded into a team of researchers developing AI models that produce markers of musculoskeletal health directly from medical images, as part of the Future Health Technologies 2 (FHT2) programme.
