The Shipping Coordinator position assists with overseeing the delivery and shipping department. This role works closely with customers, sales personnel, customer service, branch personnel, warehouse staff, and drivers to support daily shipping operations, coordinate truck routing, address shipping issues, maintain an organized staging area, and ensure accurate and timely deliveries.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee daily shipping operations and shipping department staff.
- Schedule and coordinate daily assignments for shipping associates to support efficient and timely outbound operations.
- Train, mentor, and provide ongoing direction to shipping associates.
- Monitor department activity, performance reports, accuracy, and productivity, and address inefficiencies or errors as needed.
- Delegate responsibilities and adjust workloads based on operational needs and priorities.
- Assist with fleet routing, including second runs and other delivery needs as necessary.
- Assist with coordinating and responding to customer requests when applicable.
- Ensure shipping activities meet established standards for accuracy, efficiency, safety, and customer service.
- Support company goals, policies, procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Partner with Human Resources and the Safety Committee on employee, safety, and continuous improvement matters.
- Perform shipping department duties as operational needs require.
- Provide back-up and support to the Shipping Manager and Router as needed.
- Assist with employee hiring, retention, training and development, performance management, and corrective action responsibilities.
Knowledge & Skills
- Working knowledge of company products, processes, and distribution operations.
- Understanding of DOT and FMCSA requirements, as well as state and local transportation regulations.
- Ability to read maps and utilize GPS technology effectively.
- Knowledge of local roads and customer locations within the service area.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication, teamwork, customer service, and organizational skills.
- Sound judgment and effective problem-solving abilities.
- Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment and computer systems.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent; or
- Six months to one year of related experience and/or training; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in plumbing, waterworks, distribution, logistics, or dispatching is preferred.
Certifications & Licenses
- Ability to pass operator exam and safely operate powered industrial equipment.
- Valid Chauffeur's License (or willingness to obtain one) and an acceptable driving record.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Frequently required to walk, stand, talk, hear, grasp, handle, reach, and use fingers.
- Regularly required to sit, climb, bend, stoop, push, pull, carry, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must perform essential job functions safely and with consistent alertness.
- Vision requirements include near and far vision.
- Work is performed primarily indoors with occasional outdoor exposure to extreme weather conditions.
- Noise levels are generally moderate.
