Junior Carpenter role

The Junior Carpenter is an entry‑level role within the carpentry crew, providing essential hands‑on support to skilled carpenters. This position assists in the construction, repair and installation of wooden frameworks and fixtures, maintains a clean and safe work environment and learns the carpentry trade through supervised, on‑the‑job training at FDR Suriname Holdings’ remote sites in Suriname. It serves as the primary entry point into the carpentry trade and offers a clear development pathway toward the Carpenter (Skilled) and Senior Carpenter levels.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with constructing, repairing and installing wooden structures, including foundations, walls, floors, roofs and furniture, under the direction of experienced carpenters. Support assembly, installation and repair of frameworks, fixtures, scaffolding and forms.
• Prepare and move tools, equipment and materials; set up machinery and support mine crews during projects.
• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on camp buildings, fixtures and furnishings. Maintain a clean and organized work site, follow mine safety policies and ensure that personal protective equipment is used properly.
• Participate in apprenticeship training, learning to use hand and power tools, interpret plans and build to specifications.
• Complete daily logs and other documentation; perform additional duties as assigned by seniors.

Qualifications and Experience

• No formal educational requirement. Entry-level position open to motivated candidates. Any technical or vocational background (mechanics, construction, agriculture) is an advantage. Basic literacy and numeracy required for core tray labelling and basic record-keeping.
• No prior carpenter experience required — full on-the-job training provided by the Senior Carpenter or Site Services Supervisor. Previous experience in a physically demanding outdoor or industrial role is an advantage.
• Basic understanding of carpentry safety and housekeeping. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Capacity to handle tools safely after on-the-job training.
• No formal certification required at entry. First aid certification is an advantage and may be required over time.
• Basic functional communication in Dutch, English, or Sranan Tongo. Ability to follow safety instructions, shift briefs, and complete basic labelling tasks.

Working Conditions

• Camp-based in remote exploration and mining locations in Suriname with rotational field schedules, typically 4–6 weeks in the field.
• Remote mine site environment with fly‑in/fly‑out roster. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Physical demands include standing, climbing, bending and lifting up to 50 pounds; exposure to noise, dust, fumes and heights is common.
• Workers must use personal protective equipment and comply with strict safety procedures. Shifts may be long and include weekends or holidays to meet operational needs.
