    Deposit Operations Specialist I - ACH

    Job Description

    Summary 

    The Deposit Operations Specialist – ACH plays a critical role in delivering secure, accurate, and timely ACH services that support our customers, team members, and communities. This position is responsible for the processing of incoming and outgoing ACH transactions and related electronic payment activities while upholding First United’s commitment to operational excellence, risk management, and exceptional service.

    This role goes beyond transaction processing—it reflects our service philosophy by building trust through accuracy, responsiveness, and proactive communication. The Specialist actively develops into a subject matter expert while contributing to the continuous improvement of processes, ensuring we serve customers seamlessly—the first time, every time.

    The Specialist demonstrates strong ownership, sound judgment, and attention to detail while ensuring all activities align with established policies, procedures, NACHA requirements, regulatory requirements, and service level expectations.

    Key Responsibilities 

    Operational Excellence & Accuracy 

    • Process daily incoming and outgoing ACH files with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness
    • Balance and reconcile ACH file activity in accordance with established procedures and deadlines
    • Complete Treasury Management ACH originator setup and maintenance in accordance with established requirements
    • Process ACH disputes, reversals, returns, corrections, service requests ACH auto transfers, reclamations, and deceased customer maintenance in accordance with established procedures and deadlines and with sound judgement
    • Assist Community Bank personnel and internal partners with ACH transaction research and operational questions
    • Ensure ACH transactions comply with internal policies, operating procedures, NACHA requirements, and regulatory requirements

    Risk Management & Fraud Prevention 

    • Review ACH exception items and complete required verification procedures to mitigate fraud and operational risk
    • Review and resolve exception items identified through Risk Fraud Analysis and Verafin monitoring

    Continuous Improvement & Ownership 

    • Identify opportunities to improve ACH workflows, reduce risk, and enhance the customer and team member experience
    • Take initiative in researching and resolving ACH issues and completing tasks with minimal supervision
    • Support team goals by maintaining productivity, quality standards, and service level commitments

    Additional Responsibilities 

    • Complete all required compliance training and exams within established timelines
    • Maintain adherence to all First United policies, procedures, and standards
    • Support department initiatives and perform other duties as assigned by leadership
    • Maintain professional appearance and conduct consistent with organizational expectations

    Qualifications & Experience 

    Education & Experience 

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Minimum of 2 years of banking or financial services experience preferred
    • Experience in ACH processing, electronic payments, or related operational functions preferred

    Technical & Functional Skills 

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
    • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage high-volume, time-sensitive ACH tasks
    • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills in a risk-sensitive environment
    • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy under pressure

    • Excellent customer service skills across written, verbal, and interpersonal communication
    • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across teams
    • Dependable, accountable, and committed to meeting schedules and deadlines
