    Job description

    Title: Mid Branding Designer

Reports to: Creative Director │ Head of Creative

Level and band: Mid / Senior

    Location: Johannesburg / Cape Town

    Role overview:

We’re looking for a Mid-level Branding Designer to join our Creative Team.

You’ll be part of Blueprint, our Branding Engine: the team that builds and protects brands. You’ll also work across the rest of the Creative department when a brief calls for it, lending your abilities to the other engines and pulling in theirs.

You’ll build brands from the ground up: the logo, the identity system, and every rule that holds them together, right through to a finished brand guide. You care about simplicity, you obsess over detail, and you love layout more than is strictly reasonable. You don’t just make things look good. You make them consistent, considered and built to last.

Beyond building, you’ll set the CI and the standards the rest of the studio works to, create the templates and toolkits that let everyone move faster, and stay close to the work after handover, reviewing and critiquing it so nothing strays from the system you set.

You won’t be expected to lead the department (yet), but you will be expected to own your work, hold the standard, and make the brands around you better. This is for a designer with a few years behind them who’s ready to take real ownership of brand work and push it further.

    About Flume:

Flume Digital Marketing is an independent, full-service digital marketing agency based in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Amsterdam. Our team is made up of passionate professionals dedicated to delivering extraordinary results through our six MATTER values: Mentorship, Audacity, Thrive, Integrity, Excellence, and Respect.

    About you:

You’ve got a few years of design behind you and a portfolio that proves it. You can take a brand from a blank page to a finished guide without losing the thread. Simplicity is your instinct, not your compromise.

You notice the half-pixel, the loose kerning, the grid that’s one unit off, and it bothers you until it’s fixed. You love layout: the way type, space and hierarchy come together to make something feel effortless. You build systems, not one-offs, and you think about the next person who has to use what you made.

Consistency is everything to you. You hold the standard even when the deadline moves, and you’d rather ask the hard question up front than fix a lagging brand later. You take feedback without ego and give it with care. You’re confident in your skills but not precious about it, and you’ll push the brief and the client’s thinking rather than just execute it.

You’re ready to own brand projects end to end, set the standard for how the work looks, and hold that standard even after the files leave your hands.

    Key responsibilities:

    Build beautiful, coherent brands

    • Design logos and identity systems, from first concept to final artwork.
    • Lead rebrands and brand refreshes, and develop the full brand world: type, colour, grid, iconography, imagery and motion behaviour.
    • Start with discovery and the right questions before the design begins.
    • Build brands from the logo right through to a clear, usable brand guide.
    • Keep simplicity at the centre, stripping back until only what matters remains.

    Obsess over craft and layout

    • Bring a relentless eye for detail to every artboard: spacing, alignment, kerning, hierarchy.
    • Treat layout as a discipline, not a decoration.
    • Make sure every asset feels intentional, consistent and unmistakably on-brand.

Set the CI, systems and templates

    • Create CI and brand guides, digital toolkits and the social systems that flow from the brand.
    • Turn finished brands into master templates and asset libraries that are live, versioned, named and easy to use.
    • Set the brand rules and governance that keep every expression on-brand, while leaving room for the brand to breathe.
    • Design for the next person, so the brand holds together long after you’ve handed it over.

Teach the brand, then protect it

    • Onboard the rest of the studio onto a new brand or a brand update, and brief the team taking the work forward so nothing gets lost in the handover.
    • Be the brand’s quality check on the executions that follow, and flag it early when the work drifts.
    • Don’t just catch what’s off. Suggest the edits that lift the work back to the brand standard.
    • Check the brief was answered, not only that the pixels are neat, and raise inconsistencies with your CD and Client Service.

    Collaborate across the department

    • Work closely with copywriters, designers, motion and strategy to build integrated brand work.
    • Lend your craft to the other engines when they need it, and pull them in when your brand work needs theirs.
    • Explain your thinking and your choices clearly, even when the work is still forming, and bring energy to reviews and brainstorms.

    Own your process

    • Manage your own deadlines and flag early when something’s off-track.
    • Keep your files tidy, versioned and accessible.
    • Quality-check your own work before it hits review.

    Qualifications and experience:

    Foundational design experience

    • 4 - 8 years of design experience, ideally with a strong focus on branding and identity.
    • A portfolio that shows brands built end to end: logos, systems and the guides that hold them together.
    • Evidence of range across print and digital.

    Brand systems and governance

    • Experience creating brand guidelines, CI systems, toolkits and templates that others can actually use.
    • Comfortable holding work to a brand standard, and onboarding or handing brand systems over to a team.

    Relevant training

    • A degree or diploma in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field. A standout portfolio counts for as much as the certificate.

    Tools and craft

    • Fluent in Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) and comfortable in Figma.
    • Confident building templates, master files and asset libraries.
    • Happy to pick up new tools as the work needs them.

    Digital and motion (a plus)

    • Experience designing for digital platforms and an understanding of how brands behave on screen.
    • Some motion or animation know-how, or a real interest in learning it.

    Skills and requirements:

    Design and craft

    • Exceptional eye for detail, layout and typography.
    • A real feel for simplicity: knowing what to leave out.
    • Able to build consistent systems, not just individual assets.

    A custodian’s eye

    • You can hold a brand to its rules while knowing when to let it stretch.
    • You spot drift early and give feedback that elevates rather than just corrects.

    Communication

    • Open, collaborative and clear in how you give and receive feedback.
    • Comfortable presenting work and explaining your choices.
    • Willing to ask for help, and to help others.

    Time and task management

    • Can juggle multiple brand projects without dropping quality.
    • Keeps to timelines and flags blockers early.
    • Handles the pace of agency life with calm and focus.

    Growth mindset

    • Always sharpening your craft and studying good design.
    • Curious about branding, culture, tech and what’s changing in the field.
    • Wants to get better, not just get by.

    Bonus points if you have:

    • Motion or animation skills, or experience directing it.
    • Art direction experience.
    • Efficient skills using AI to build visual elements
    • A side project, type experiments, or personal design work you’re proud of.
