Position Summary
The Controls Technician I is an entry-level field technician position responsible for supporting the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and commissioning of Building Automation Systems (BAS), HVAC controls, and related control system components at customer facilities throughout the United States. Based out of GEMCO's Carmel, Indiana office, this position requires regular travel to project and service sites nationwide, typically following an established travel rotation schedule.
Working under the guidance of senior Controls Technicians, Controls Engineers, and Project Managers, the Controls Technician I assists with system startup, device installation, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and service activities while developing technical proficiency in HVAC controls, networking, building automation platforms, and energy management systems. This role provides a strong foundation for career growth within the controls and building automation industry.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties
- Assist with the installation, startup, testing, and commissioning of building automation and HVAC control systems.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on building automation systems, control panels, sensors, thermostats, actuators, controllers, and related field devices.
- Execute basic diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on controls equipment under the supervision of senior technicians.
- Assist with control system wiring verification, device calibration, point-to-point checkout, and functional testing activities.
- Support the installation and replacement of control devices, sensors, relays, actuators, thermostats, and communication components.
- Document service activities, deficiencies, diagnostic findings, corrective actions, and recommendations within work order and service management systems.
- Assist with startup and commissioning procedures to verify proper system operation and sequence execution.
- Learn to interpret wiring diagrams, control schematics, network layouts, and project documentation.
- Support integration activities involving HVAC equipment, control systems, and building automation platforms.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, service reports, inventory usage logs, and parts requests.
- Assist senior technicians with larger repairs, retrofit projects, system upgrades, and commissioning activities.
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies, customer requirements, and site-specific safety procedures.
- Communicate professionally with customers, facility personnel, subcontractors, and project team members.
- Travel to customer locations nationwide according to established schedules and project requirements.
- Maintain company-issued tools, equipment, vehicles, and technology resources in accordance with company standards.
- Participate in technical training, manufacturer certifications, and workforce development programs.
- Promote GEMCO's commitment to safety, quality, customer service, and operational excellence.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of service operations and project objectives.
