Experienced Ship Signatures Main Machinery Engineer

Overview

Experienced level engineers in the Ship Signatures Department are responsible for ensuring that the ship's systems, components, and structures are designed and built to meet a submarine's challenging noise requirements.

Ship Signatures Main Machinery experienced engineers are responsible for the acoustic design of the propulsion plant main machinery components. This includes the design of components to identify and incorporate noise control features to ensure the overall ship requirements are satisfied in addition to performing detailed analyses of the dynamic behavior of main machinery components and structures using finite element, boundary element, and statistical energy analysis techniques. The experienced engineers in this group mentor less experienced engineers to develop their skill sets in machinery silencing and are responsible for leading projects. They will work with both internal Electric Boat component and systems departments and the external component vendors. Collaboration between the Ship Signatures Main Machinery engineers and other Electric Boat disciplines in Design-Build-Sustain teams is a common job responsibility. The ability to effectively communicate the noise requirements to these other organizations is a critical skill. Job assignments include developing acoustic calculations, developing specification requirements, reviewing component vendor design submittals, and conducting or participating in component noise testing. The group also develops, implements, and validates novel numerical modeling methods using finite element analysis. The analyses are performed using state-of-the-art computer models which run on an extensive network of compute nodes. Knowledge of finite element and/or statistical energy analysis, submarine structural design tenets, dynamics, and vibrations is useful for this position.

Qualifications

Required: 

• Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
• 5+ years of postgraduate engineering experience or PhD in related field of study
• MATLAB or other coding language proficiency
• Proficiency in gear noise or other machinery noise mitigation techniques
• An active DoD SECRET clearance, or ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET clearance

Preferred: 

• Masters Degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, or Ocean Engineering
• Proficiency in finite element modeling and analysis (HyperMesh and/or Abaqus experience preferred)
• Experience in dynamics, acoustics, and vibrations
• Experience in project management
• Experience in mentoring engineers
• Experience in digital signal processing, testing, and data acquisition
• Experience or interest in signal processing, testing and data acquisition and technical report writing

Skills

Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, are necessary for success as a ship signatures engineer. Developing productive relationships with internal and external customers, which may include collaborating engineering organizations, construction staff, government contractors, and the Navy customer, is key.
