Position Summary
The Medical Courier is responsible for the safe, accurate, and timely transportation of medical specimens, medications, supplies, equipment, and confidential documents between Genesis Healthcare locations, laboratories, and other approved destinations. This position requires strong organizational skills, excellent communication, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, confidentiality, and customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Pick up and transport laboratory specimens according to established schedules and timelines.
- Ensure proper handling, packaging, labeling, and storage of specimens during transportation.
- Deliver medications, medical supplies, equipment, and documents to designated locations.
- Maintain chain-of-custody procedures and delivery documentation as required.
- Follow all transportation and safety protocols to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and report maintenance needs promptly.
- Maintain vehicle cleanliness and readiness for daily operations.
- Clean and disinfect specimen transport containers and equipment according to established procedures.
- Monitor transport conditions to maintain specimen integrity and prevent contamination.
- Communicate effectively with clinical staff, laboratory personnel, vendors, and leadership.
- Provide timely updates regarding delays, transportation issues, or specimen concerns.
- Foster positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Participate in team meetings, training programs, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain strict compliance with HIPAA and all federal, state, and organizational privacy requirements.
- Safeguard confidential patient information at all times.
- Represent Genesis Healthcare professionally in all interactions.
- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, mission, vision, and values.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid South Carolina driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to drive for extended periods throughout the service area.
- Ability to lift and transport up to 30 pounds.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent customer service and communication abilities.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple delivery priorities.
Preferred
- Previous courier, medical courier, healthcare transportation, logistics, or delivery experience.
- Familiarity with medical terminology or laboratory specimen handling.
- Experience working in healthcare, laboratory, or clinical environments.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent driving and entering/exiting vehicles.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to safely load, unload, and transport medical supplies and specimens.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
