The Role

We are seeking a full-time Power Market Analyst to join Wood Mackenzie’s Power & Renewables team, focusing on the development and application of advanced power market models across European electricity markets.

As a Power Market Analyst, you will play a key role in building, maintaining, and enhancing market optimization models used to analyse power systems, generation economics, transmission constraints, and market outcomes. You will apply linear programming (LP) and other optimization techniques to simulate market behaviour, assess investment and operational decisions, and provide actionable insights on power market dynamics, decarbonization pathways, and energy transition challenges.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and enhance optimization-based power market models for European electricity markets.
• Design and implement LP and mixed-integer optimization models to simulate generation dispatch, storage operation, cross-border trading, and market-clearing mechanisms.
• Analyse power market fundamentals, including supply-demand dynamics, renewable integration, fuel markets, emissions costs, and transmission constraints.
• Conduct scenario analysis to evaluate market outcomes, asset profitability, policy impacts, and energy transition pathways.
• Translate complex model outputs into clear market insights and recommendations for internal stakeholders and clients.
• Improve model methodologies, assumptions, and analytical frameworks to enhance model accuracy, transparency, and performance.
• Work with large datasets and develop efficient data workflows to support model development and analysis.
• Collaborate with experts across power markets, renewable energy, economics, and policy to deliver high-quality research and market intelligence.
• Monitor developments in European energy markets, regulatory frameworks, and market design, assessing their impact on market participants and investment decisions.
• Support client engagements through presentations, bespoke analyses, technical discussions, and thought leadership.

About You

We are looking for a highly analytical and intellectually curious individual with a strong foundation in optimization, quantitative modelling, and power market analysis. You enjoy solving complex problems, building robust models, and generating insights that support strategic decision-making.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

• A degree in Operations Research, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Energy Systems, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline.
• Experience in electricity market analysis, power system modeling, or energy economics.
• Strong knowledge of optimization techniques, particularly linear programming (LP) and mixed-integer programming (MIP).
• Experience developing and implementing mathematical models for power systems, generation portfolios, storage assets, or electricity markets.
• Proficiency in Python and/or other programming languages used for optimization and quantitative analysis.
• Experience with optimization frameworks and solvers such as Gurobi, CPLEX, Xpress, Pyomo, or similar tools.
• Strong understanding of European power market fundamentals, market design, and price formation mechanisms.
• Ability to analyze complex datasets and communicate technical findings clearly to both technical and commercial audiences.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
