Primary Purpose
The General Labourer is responsible for carrying out a wide range of manual and support duties to ensure the smooth daily operation of the farm or camp. This role focuses on maintaining cleanliness, assisting with the movement and handling of materials, supporting supervisors and skilled workers, and ensuring that facilities, equipment, and workspaces remain safe, functional, and hygienic at all times.
The position is physically demanding and requires a reliable individual who can work well in outdoor and indoor environments, follow instructions, and contribute to overall productivity and safety on site.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Operational Support
- Carry out general cleaning of work areas, storage facilities, accommodation areas, kitchens, and surrounding grounds.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of workspaces, tools, and equipment.
- Support farm operations by helping with routine tasks such as harvesting support, sorting produce, or basic maintenance activities as directed.
Materials Handling
- Lift, carry, move, and transport materials, tools, equipment, and supplies to designated areas.
- Pack, load, and unload goods, produce, or equipment from vehicles, storage areas, or work sites.
- Organise and stack materials in a safe and orderly manner to prevent damage and hazards.
Cleaning and Maintenance
- Maintain cleanliness of tools, equipment, and common areas.
- Dispose of waste properly in accordance with site procedures and environmental guidelines.
- Report any damaged equipment, unsafe conditions, or maintenance needs to the supervisor.
Support to Supervisors and Team
- Assist supervisors, technicians, or skilled workers with assigned tasks.
- Follow daily work schedules and instructions provided by the Farm Supervisor or Camp Boss.
- Work collaboratively with other team members to meet operational targets and deadlines.
Hygiene and Standards
- Maintain high personal hygiene and cleanliness standards.
- Ensure workspaces meet basic health and sanitation requirements.
- Follow procedures related to food safety, biosecurity, and sanitation where applicable.
Reporting Relationship
The General Labourer reports directly to the designated Farm Supervisor / Camp Boss and may receive daily instructions from other authorised supervisors or team leaders.
Safety and Compliance
The General Labourer is expected to adhere strictly to all occupational health and safety requirements, including:
- Complying with all Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) rules and workplace policies.
- Wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, boots, helmets, or masks as required.
- Using tools and equipment safely and only for their intended purpose.
- Reporting all injuries, accidents, near misses, or unsafe conditions immediately to the supervisor.
- Participating in safety briefings and training sessions when required.
Failure to follow safety procedures may result in disciplinary action, as this role operates in potentially hazardous environments.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills preferred.
- Medically fit to perform physically demanding tasks.
- Willingness to work outdoors, in varying weather conditions, and flexible hours if required.
Knowledge and Experience
Experience
- Prior experience in manual labour, farming, construction, warehouse work, or similar environments is an asset but not mandatory.
Skills and Competencies
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work under supervision.
- Strong physical stamina and ability to perform repetitive tasks such as lifting, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods.
- Basic understanding of workplace safety and hygiene practices.
- Good teamwork skills and willingness to assist others.
