Primary Purpose of the Role
The Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, servicing, maintenance, and repair of company vehicles, heavy equipment, generators, and mechanical systems to ensure operational reliability, safety, and compliance with company standards and Guyana occupational safety laws.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Mechanic shall perform the following duties, including but not limited to:
Diagnostics and Troubleshooting
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and transmission faults using computerized diagnostic equipment, software, and manual testing tools
- Identify malfunctions in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical circuits, braking systems, and drivetrains
- Assess equipment performance and determine appropriate corrective actions
Preventive Maintenance
- Perform scheduled and preventive maintenance in accordance with maintenance plans and manufacturer specifications
- Conduct oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication of moving parts, equipment adjustments, and routine cleaning
- Ensure maintenance activities are completed to prevent breakdowns, accidents, and operational delays
Repairs and Overhauls
- Disassemble, repair, and reassemble heavy machinery and mechanical components
- Overhaul major systems including engines, gearboxes, transmissions, hydraulic pumps, and drive systems
- Replace worn, damaged, or defective parts such as bearings, gears, pistons, seals, hoses, and fittings
- Test repaired equipment to confirm proper operation
Inspection and Safety Checks
- Inspect machinery and vehicles to ensure they are safe for operation
- Conduct checks on steering, braking systems, tires, suspension, and safety mechanisms
- Identify unsafe equipment conditions and immediately report defects
- Remove unsafe equipment from service where required
Field Service and On-Site Repairs
- Travel to remote or on-site locations to repair machinery that cannot be transported to a workshop
- Perform repairs under field conditions, including adverse weather and terrain, while maintaining safety standards
- Respond to breakdowns and urgent repair requests to minimize downtime
Welding and Fabrication
- Perform welding, cutting, and metal fabrication as required to repair, reinforce, or modify machinery, frames, brackets, and structural components
- Ensure welding and fabrication work meets safety and quality standards
Equipment Attachments
- Service, inspect, and repair machine attachments including booms, buckets, blades, winches, and related components
- Ensure attachments are securely fitted and safe for operation
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of maintenance, repairs, parts used, and hours worked on specific equipment
- Complete maintenance logs, service reports, and defect reports as required by the Company
- Communicate equipment status and repair needs to supervisors
General Responsibilities
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition
- Comply with work schedules and maintenance priorities set by management
- Perform any other related duties reasonably assigned within the scope of the role
Reporting Relationship
The Mechanic reports directly to the Operations Supervisor / Mine Manager / Site Manager or any other designated supervisor.
Safety and Compliance Obligations
The Mechanic shall:
- Comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Act of Guyana
- Wear all required PPE
- Follow lock-out/tag-out procedures
- Report all incidents and near-misses
- Not operate unsafe equipment
- Participate in safety inductions and drills
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum age: 18 years
- Technical certificate or vocational training in mechanical repairs preferred
- Valid driver’s permit (if required for duties)
- Medically fit for field and physical work
Knowledge and Experience
- Minimum of 5 years experience servicing diesel and petrol engines
- Knowledge of basic electrical and hydraulic systems
- Familiarity with industrial equipment
- Ability to work in remote and physically demanding environments
