PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Sawman (Chainsaw Operator) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operation of chainsaw equipment for land preparation, clearing, timber cutting, and site access support in designated operational areas of Geotic Industries Inc. The role supports field operations by ensuring that vegetation and timber are cleared in accordance with operational plans, safety standards, and environmental regulations.
The position requires strict adherence to occupational safety procedures, responsible equipment handling, and cooperation with site teams to maintain productivity and site readiness.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Sawman shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
Operational Duties
- Operate chainsaws and related cutting equipment for clearing vegetation, timber, and obstructions within assigned operational areas.
- Perform land and access preparation to support field activities, machinery movement, and camp or site development.
- Cut, trim, section, and stack timber as directed by the Site Supervisor or Operations Manager.
- Assist with the clearing of drainage paths, access routes, and operational zones.
- Support emergency clearing operations where required for safety or access.
Equipment and Asset Management
- Conduct daily pre-use inspections of chainsaws and cutting tools.
- Maintain chainsaw equipment, including sharpening, cleaning, fueling, and minor servicing.
- Report mechanical faults, damages, or safety concerns immediately.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of fuel, oils, and lubricants.
Safety and Compliance
- Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times, including helmet, gloves, boots, eye protection, ear protection, and protective clothing.
- Comply with all Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) procedures and site safety rules.
- Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and incident reporting.
- Immediately report accidents, near-misses, or unsafe conditions.
Environmental Responsibility
- Conduct operations in a manner that minimises environmental damage.
- Follow instructions regarding designated cutting zones and protected areas.
- Avoid unnecessary destruction of vegetation or resources outside assigned areas.
Team and Site Support
- Work collaboratively with machine operators, supervisors, and field teams.
- Assist with other manual field tasks where required.
- Follow site instructions and operational schedules.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The Sawman reports directly to the Site Supervisor / Operations Manager / Mine Manager and operates under the general direction of the field operations leadership team.
The Sawman may also receive operational instructions from:
- Senior Operator
- Assistant Manager
- Safety Officer
SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE OBLIGATIONS
The Sawman is legally and professionally required to:
- Comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Act of Guyana.
- Follow all company safety policies and site regulations.
- Use PPE as issued and instructed.
- Participate in mandatory safety training and certification programmes.
- Submit to safety audits, inspections, and medical fitness assessments where required.
Failure to comply with safety standards may result in disciplinary action, including termination.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Basic literacy and ability to follow instructions.
- Demonstrated experience operating chainsaws or similar equipment.
- Physical fitness suitable for manual field work.
- Valid form of identification.
- Willingness to work in remote field environments.
Formal academic qualifications are not mandatory, but practical experience is essential.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate should possess:
- Practical knowledge of chainsaw operation and safety techniques.
- Understanding of basic equipment maintenance.
- Experience working in field, forestry, construction, or similar operational environments.
- Awareness of workplace safety and hazard prevention.
Previous experience in industrial or large-scale field operations is an asset.
