    Future Detentions Specialist Opportunities – Gilpin County Sheriff's Office

    Primary Responsibility: A Detentions Specialist performs all duties related to the Detentions Control Room, ensuring safety, security, and efficient operations within the Gilpin County Detention Facility.

    Supervised by: Sergeant (In absence of Sergeant, use chain of command established by Gilpin County Sheriff's Office.)
    Supervises: N/A

    Pay Grade: NE9 - $24.79 - $32.21

    Hiring Range: $24.79 - $28.49 per hour depending on experience

    open for a minimum of one week or until filled

    Main Job Duties:

    • Maintains visual observation of all individuals inside the jail, including staff, public visitors, vendors, and inmates, during activities such as meal distribution, commissary, exchanges, medications, and other movements throughout the facility.
    • Verifies identity and ensures authorized access to the Gilpin County Detentions Facility.
    • Communicates with inmates, giving information and directions via intercoms.
    • Operates the central control center, including panels, monitors, security cameras, and television screens to view all areas of the detentions facility. Performs visual and audio surveillance of doors and activities of inmates and staff. Responds to fire and panic alarms, determines the location of incidents, and dispatches assistance promptly.
    • Utilizes computerized data entry equipment, various word processing and database programs to enter, store, and retrieve inmate information.
    • Prepares various logs, forms and reports, documenting movement and activities of inmates and staff.
    • Maintains cleanliness of assigned workstation.
    • Acts as first response to medical emergencies, inmate fights and altercations.
    • Communications with deputies for adequate response to situations
    • Identifies equipment failures and reports repair requests following the appropriate chain of command.
    • Operates 800 and VHF radios to receive and send information to Communications, deputies and other emergency service agencies.

    Additional Job Duties:

    • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by Sergeants, Division Chiefs or Undersheriff and any duties needed to stabilize an emergency situation.
    • Assists in training other staff, including Deputies and Detention Specialists, under the supervision of the Detentions Training Coordinator.

    Hours:

    • Must be available for shift work, to include weekends, holidays, and on-call coverage.

    Qualifications:

    Education: 

    High school graduate or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and training that would provide the required knowledge and skills to perform the job.Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.

    Ability to:

    (a) Work well with others and maintain a professional relationship with supervisors, subordinates, outside law enforcement personnel and the public.

    (b) Think and act promptly and efficiently in emergency and stressful situations.

    (c) Follow complex instructions.

    (d) Exercise independent judgment and critical thought.

    (e) Accurately and effectively transmit and receive information that is necessary to the accomplishment of goals and objectives, including effective written and oral communications in English; and the ability to listen.

    (f) Multi-task effectively.

    • Must pass a background check and have no felony convictions or significant prior criminal activity.

    Mental/Physical Requirements:

    • Must be able to perform essential job functions unassisted and at a pace consistent with job requirements. This includes a high level of perceptual senses such as vision, hearing, speaking, and flexibility, as well as the ability to sit for extended periods and operate surveillance equipment.
