The Sr. Managing Director, Valuation Services plays a senior leadership role in complex business valuation, financial modeling, and valuation advisory engagements while owning meaningful client relationships, driving business development, ensuring quality execution, and developing valuation professionals.
The Sr. Managing Director leads complex valuation engagements across transaction support, financial reporting, tax, litigation, restructuring, shareholder disputes, portfolio valuation, complex securities, intangible assets, and strategic advisory matters. Success in this role requires advanced valuation expertise, strong commercial judgment, client relationship depth, business development capability, team leadership, and the ability to manage risk, quality, profitability, and stakeholder expectations while collaborating closely with Senior Managing Directors on broader practice priorities.
Valuation Engagement Execution
Lead complex valuation engagements involving businesses, equity interests, intangible assets, complex securities, debt instruments, portfolio investments, structured finance assets, and other financial assets.
Direct the selection and application of appropriate valuation methodologies, including discounted cash flow analysis, guideline public company analysis, precedent transaction analysis, market multiples, option-based methods, and other income, market, and asset-based approaches.
Review and approve valuation models, financial analyses, supporting schedules, market research, sensitivity analyses, written narratives, reports, presentations, expert analyses, and client deliverables prior to senior-level or client-facing use.
Evaluate and challenge key assumptions, financial projections, discount rates, control premiums, discounts for lack of marketability, comparable company data, transaction evidence, and other inputs for reasonableness, supportability, and consistency with professional standards and engagement objectives.
Judgment-Driven Problem Solving
Exercise senior professional judgment when valuation matters involve incomplete information, contested assumptions, changing market conditions, client sensitivities, regulatory or audit review, litigation exposure, or multiple acceptable methodologies.
Set engagement-specific analytical direction that balances technical rigor, professional standards, commercial reality, client objectives, timing, economics, and defensibility.
Resolve or escalate valuation risks, data limitations, methodological issues, documentation gaps, and review comments while maintaining credibility, efficiency, quality, and appropriate risk discipline.
Stakeholder Interaction & Client Service
Serve as a senior relationship owner and primary client-facing leader for assigned valuation engagements, working with clients, attorneys, auditors, investors, lenders, management teams, private equity sponsors, boards, and other stakeholders.
Communicate complex valuation concepts, assumptions, methodologies, sensitivities, risks, and conclusions clearly through reports, presentations, memoranda, meetings, negotiations, and executive-level discussions.
Build, maintain, and expand trusted client and advisor relationships through responsiveness, technical credibility, practical judgment, and consistently high-quality execution.
Coordinate with Senior Managing Directors, Directors, external advisors, and cross-functional service teams to align valuation approach, staffing, pricing, timing, quality expectations, client objectives, and follow-on opportunities.
Team Leadership & Development
Lead, supervise, coach, and review the work of Directors, Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates, providing feedback on valuation judgment, client communication, technical execution, documentation, leadership readiness, and professional development.
Delegate effectively across engagements while retaining accountability for quality, accuracy, analytical support, client satisfaction, budget discipline, timeliness, and engagement economics.
Develop Directors and managers into stronger engagement leaders by building technical depth, commercial judgment, client-service capability, leadership maturity, and confidence.
Contribute to recruiting, onboarding, training, performance feedback, succession planning, and retention of valuation professionals.
Engagement Management & Firm Contribution
Manage engagement portfolios within established budgets and timelines; proactively address scope changes, staffing needs, data constraints, client issues, delivery risks, realization, and profitability considerations.
Monitor and manage engagement economics, utilization, realization, billing, collections support, staffing leverage, and quality control while maintaining client service standards.
Drive business development and market-facing activity, including client and referral source relationship building, proposal development, pitch participation, thought leadership, cross-service collaboration, and identification of new engagement opportunities.
Contribute to practice strategy, valuation standards, training, knowledge management, methodology development, quality review, risk management, and operational improvement initiatives in collaboration with Senior Managing Directors.
· Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or a related field.
· Typically 11–15+ years of experience in business valuation, financial advisory, transaction advisory, litigation support, corporate finance, investment banking, public accounting, or related consulting roles.
· CPA, CFA, ASA, ABV, CVA, or similar professional credential strongly preferred; multiple credentials or advanced degree preferred.
· Advanced knowledge of valuation theory, financial statement analysis, financial modeling, market research, valuation standards, report preparation, and quality control.
· Demonstrated experience lea
ding complex valuation engagements, managing client relationships, reviewing sophisticated valuation analyses, and delivering high-quality client work product.
· Proven ability to manage engagement teams, budgets, timelines, quality expectations, client relationships, engagement economics, and competing priorities in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.
· Strong business development orientation with demonstrated contribution to proposals, relationship development, thought leadership, cross-service collaboration, or revenue generation.
· Excellent executive-level written, verbal, presentation, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
· Willingness to travel as required.
· Prior experience leading valuations for disputes, shareholder matters, M&A transactions, purchase price allocations, impairment testing, tax planning, estate and gift matters, restructuring, fairness opinions, portfolio valuation, complex securities, intangible assets, or financial reporting.
· Advanced Excel modeling capability and proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint; familiarity with valuation databases and research tools such as Capital IQ, PitchBook, Bloomberg, DealStats, or similar platforms preferred.
· Strong familiarity with professional valuation standards and relevant accounting, tax, regulatory, audit, transaction, and litigation contexts.
· Experience developing Directors, Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates across technical, client-service, business development, and leadership dimensions.
· Strong market-facing presence with the ability to build credibility with business owners, executives, attorneys, auditors, investors, lenders, private equity sponsors, referral sources, boards, and senior stakeholders.
· Demonstrated ability to identify, pursue, and support new business opportunities while expanding existing client and advisor relationships.
