    Reporting to the Supervisor, Civil Registry, the Juridical Officer, Civil is responsible for providing day-to-day administrative support to the judiciary to ensure all court documentation related to Civil, Family and Child Protection, Divorce, Probate, Appeals, and Bankruptcy matters are properly prepared, filed and maintained within the Nunavut Court of Justice. The incumbent also provides courtroom services, courtroom simultaneous digital recording services and maintains complete records of court proceedings as well as clerking services pre-Courtroom, Courtroom and post-Courtroom duties) for the Nunavut Court of Justice.

    The Juridical Officer, Civil main responsibilities are but are not limited to:

    • Registering and issuing (signs, seals, and date stamps) all court pleadings and processes (i.e. statements of claim, notices of application, garnishing order, etc.), ensuring all filed documents are in compliance with the Rules of Court.

    • Providing registry support services such as clerking civil court and filing civil documents in accordance with the Rules of Court, Practice Directives and court procedures.

    • Assisting the Public and legal professionals in completing court documents pursuant to Rules of Court and procedures.

    • Receiving and processing bail review requests and appeals for both Criminal and Civil Matters ensuring proper documentation and Rules of Court, Court of Appeal Rules, Practice Directives and procedure are followed.

    • Performing juridical clerical functions prior to, during, and following court proceedings including the administering of oaths, the accurate marking of exhibits and accurate keeping of minutes.

    • Issuing documents and Orders resulting from Court proceedings, accurately reflecting the decisions of the presiding judge to protect the rights of litigants before the Court.

    The knowledge, skills, abilities required for the Juridical Officer, Civil’s position are usually obtained through a High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of related experience, preferably in a court or legal setting environment. The ability to communicate in Inuktitut and/or Inuinnaqtun is considered an asset.

    This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.

    The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
