    The Opportunity:

    The Ministry of SaskBuilds & Procurement, Mail Services, has an immediate opening for a Permanent Part-time Postal Clerk located in Meadow Lake. This position will be the primary postal clerk and will be scheduled for Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

    This position is responsible for processing a large volume of incoming and outgoing mail for a client base. Duties of this position include sorting, metering and handling of letters, packages and boxes. You will read, understand, memorize, and recall various pieces of information such as codes, locations, etc. in order to sort and meter mail quickly and accurately. You will perform routine maintenance and operation of postage meter equipment, including changing ink cartridges and filling water wells. You will give information on postal rates and regulations. You will be required to lift and carry mail bags, boxes and parcels of up to 30kg and perform related duties as assigned.

    Driving within the town is required for delivery and pick up of mail to various provincial government local offices. A government vehicle is provided to complete these duties.

    The successful candidate must have a good driving record including a current and valid driver’s license as daily driving within the town is required. You must also have a thorough knowledge of the rules to safely operate a motor vehicle.

    The successful candidate must be able to lift and carry heavy articles of up to 30kg, repeatedly, on a daily basis. This position requires standing for long periods of time, repetitive motion (wrist), some exposure to noise from machinery, exposure to dust, and handling of hazardous materials (i.e. medical specimens).

    The successful candidate will be flexible to successfully adapt to changing work environments, processes, and workloads. He or she will also be creative and a team player to co-operatively discover and implement solutions to challenges that arise. The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are typically obtained through a combination of education and/or related experience.

    Responsibilities

    • Supervise mailroom staff providing guidance and communicating policies, procedures, and customer requirements.
    • Sort, meter, and process incoming and outgoing mail, including letters, packages, and parcels.
    • Read, understand, and recall codes, locations, and related information to accurately sort and meter mail.
    • Operate and perform routine maintenance on postage meter equipment (e.g., replacing ink cartridges, filling water wells).
    • Provide information on postal rates, regulations, and mail handling procedures.
    • Deliver and pick up mail within the community using a government vehicle.
    • Lift and carry mailbags, boxes, and parcels repeatedly throughout the day.
    • Respond to customer inquiries and requests related to mail services.
    • Maintain safe work practices, including the safe handling of hazardous materials (e.g., medical specimens).

    • Ability to use Microsoft Office applications (eg. Word, Excel) to input, update, edit, retrieve, maintain and transmit information with speed and accuracy
    • Ability to read, memorize and recognize information such as addresses, codes and locations to ensure mail is sorted and processed accurately and within strict timeframes
    • Ability to identify, clarify and analyze relevant issues or concerns and implement solutions in a timely fashion
    • Ability to work independently and as a contributing member in a team environment in order to complete work assignments, achieve common goals and contribute towards a positive workplace
    • Ability to listen, accurately comprehend and respond to inquiries from co-workers, clients and other agencies and to relay information in an accurate, clear, concise and courteous manner
    • Liaise with other agencies, staff, ministries and the public to obtain, exchange, coordinate or confirm information while maintaining confidentiality and staying within policies and procedures
    • Ability to take the initiative to independently assess and adjust your workload, taking into consideration changing priorities, tight deadlines, multiple reporting relationships and constant interruptions
    • Ability to quickly and accurately assess and respond to unexpected and potentially dangerous situations, such as wet mailbags, in order to ensure the safety of yourself and others
