The Opportunity:
The Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety provides a fair justice system that promotes safe and secure communities; provides supervision and rehabilitative services for adult and young offenders; and ensures that effective policing programs uphold the rule of law and protect society and the rights of individuals.
We have an opportunity for employment as a Program Specialist within Community Corrections, Meadow Lake office. In addition to regular Probation Officer/Community Youth Worker duties, you will provide group programming with a primary focus on violence but could include gender-specific programming.
As part of Community Corrections, job duties may include both Youth and/or Adult clients. As part of the Risk-Need-Responsivity model, you will conduct validated generalized and specialized assessments that are evidence-based, prepare court reports, develop and implement offender relapse prevention plans. Your outstanding interpersonal skills will help you respond effectively with victims of criminal offences, collaborate with community agencies, victim resources, police and other government personnel to provide an integrated approach to offender management and supervision in the community.
You will be able to:
- develop and deliver presentations and/or facilitate meetings to promote a greater understanding of issues and initiatives at a level appropriate to the audience;
- analyze and evaluate data/information to make decisions/recommendations about the effectiveness of practices and programs;
- challenge group participants while developing and maintaining open, honest relationships so that they accept responsibility for their behaviours and are able to solve problems in a healthy, productive manner;
- identify and systematically assess the factors underlying criminal behaviour and the risks and needs, to intervene in a manner which respects the individual’s unique abilities, aptitudes and social and cultural circumstance and responsivity;
- independently plan and balance diverse and conflicting workload pressures, in a timely manner accomplishing program goals while meeting client needs;
- anticipate and recognize conflict or potentially violent situations and respond to ensure the safety of self, clients and others; and
- access, retrieve, input and process information using various electronic systems in an accurate and timely manner.
To qualify, you will possess a degree from an accredited university or college; or a minimum two-year diploma, with a focus on the principles of behavioural change and other assessment skills, this would include Correctional Studies, Justice Studies, Community and Justice Services, Social Work or Mental Health; or meet the grandfathering provisions in accordance with Community Corrections qualifications. If your degree was obtained outside of Canada, you must have it assessed against Canadian education standards.

You will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
- theories and intervention strategies including addictions, cognitive behavioral programming, family systems, group intervention process and evidence based practice;
- the impact of crime/abuse/sexual violence on victims;
- community services and resources and the extent to which these resources and services support clients in the community; and
- indicators and dynamics of addictions, domestic violence, poverty, disabilities, family relationships, abuse and neglect and their impact on the client's ability to effect necessary change when executing a case plan.
This position is required to travel and work flexible hours, which sometimes may involve evenings. A valid driver’s license is required.
