    The Opportunity:

    Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Attorney General, the Public Guardian and Trustee exercises the statutory powers and responsibilities set out in The Public Guardian and Trustee Act and related Saskatchewan legislation. The office acts where required by law or where there is no other suitable person available, and must carry out its responsibilities with integrity, impartiality, sound judgment and careful stewardship of client interests.

    The successful candidate will provide strategic and operational leadership to a multidisciplinary office delivering legal, trust, estate, accounting, and administrative services across Saskatchewan. This includes overseeing operational performance, managing legal, fiduciary, financial, operational and reputational risk, strengthening relationships with partners and stakeholders, and ensuring that the office meets its legal, fiduciary, financial and public accountability obligations.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide strategic direction and executive leadership for the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee.
    • Exercise the statutory powers, duties and authorities of the Public Guardian and Trustee under The Public Guardian and Trustee Act and related legislation.
    • Oversee adult property guardianship, estate administration, and protection of children’s legal and financial interests in Saskatchewan.
    • Oversee legal, accounting, trust management, estate administration and related administrative services.
    • Ensure the prudent management and investment of assets held in trust for clients.
    • Lead, develop and support a skilled multidisciplinary team and foster a healthy, inclusive and respectful workplace.
    • Build effective relationships with courts, families, service providers, professional bodies, Indigenous governments and organizations, community partners, other ministries and public agencies.
    • Provide strategic legal, legislative, policy and operational advice to the Assistant Deputy Attorney General and other senior ministry officials.

    Technical Knowledge and Skills: 

    • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.).
    • Membership in good standing, or eligibility for membership, with the Law Society of Saskatchewan.
    • Significant legal experience interpreting and applying legislation and providing advice on complex legal, policy, and statutory matters.
    • Demonstrated senior leadership experience in a complex legal, public-sector, regulatory, or fiduciary environment.
    • Sound understanding of fiduciary obligations, administrative law, statutory decision-making, governance, and public accountability.
    • Executive presence, sound judgment, integrity, and the professional credibility to make decisions involving vulnerable individuals, competing interests, and significant legal or financial consequences.
    • Experience managing sensitive, high-profile, or contentious matters.
    • Legal experience related to guardianship, trusts, estates, civil litigation, substitute decision-making, and the administration or investment of assets held on behalf of others would be considered an asset.
