Magruder Hospital is seeking a detail-oriented Medical Coder to join our Health Information Management team. In this role, you will review patient medical records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and related diagnostic and procedural codes for inpatient and outpatient services. This position plays a critical role in supporting regulatory compliance, accurate reimbursement, and the integrity of the medical record while maintaining strict patient confidentiality.
• Review inpatient and outpatient medical records to assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes
• Apply ICD-10-CM, CPT, modifier, DRG, APC, and ASC coding guidelines
• Abstract clinical information and enter coded data into hospital information systems
• Complete coding summaries while meeting established productivity and accuracy standards
• Maintain coding accuracy of at least 97% based on audit results
• Review coding updates and regulatory changes to ensure compliance
• Utilize medical necessity software and perform code validation reviews
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA, Joint Commission, and applicable regulatory standards
• Query providers to clarify documentation and improve coding accuracy
• Apply accurate charges for procedures and evaluation and management services
• Confirm appropriate Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) and Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) assignments
• Support optimal reimbursement through compliant coding practices
• Monitor unbilled account reports and resolve outstanding coding accounts
• Collaborate with billing and reimbursement teams to support timely claim processing
• Utilize coding and encoding software efficiently and accurately
• Perform additional departmental duties and projects as assigned

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Experience with ICD-10-CM, CPT coding, modifiers, DRGs, APCs, and medical coding principles
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes
• Strong attention to detail, organizational, and deadline-management skills
• Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion
• Proficiency with coding software, encoding systems, and standard PC applications
• RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician), CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), CPC (Certified Professional Coder), or RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) credential
• Previous hospital-based inpatient and outpatient coding experience
• Experience working with electronic health records and hospital information systems
• Familiarity with reimbursement methodologies and revenue cycle operations
