    Job description

    Job Summary:

    Performs a variety of venipuncture techniques and collects and processes blood specimens from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Provides guidance and training to subordinate phlebotomist.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Knowledge of blood processing and handling procedures. Knowledge of relevant clinical and patient care regulations, policies, procedures, and standards. Knowledge of infection control and sterile procedures. Interpersonal skills to allay pay patient fears and interact with staff. Ability to perform standard phlebotomy procedures and techniques. Ability to comply with clinical protocol, specifications, and procedures. Ability to complete and maintain documents and records. Ability to perform basic supervisory functions.

    Responsibilities

    • Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, using standard equipment such as vaccutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, syringes, and butterfly needles.
    • Confers with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.
    • Prepares, processes, labels, and stores patient specimens and samples according to established procedures.
    • Maintains inventory of supplies; stocks supplies on carts and hand trays.
    • Performs quality control procedures to maintain compliance with applicable regulations; trains and mentors subordinate staff.
    • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards and practices.

    Physical and Environmental Demands

    Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, constant standing, occasional twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
