About the role:
A Staff Software Engineer, Developer Experience sets the technical vision and strategy for how engineers across Index Exchange build, test, and ship software. Operating across teams and organizational boundaries, they identify the highest-leverage sources of friction in the software development lifecycle and mobilize the organization to remove them — sometimes by building tools directly, more often by setting direction, defining standards, and driving improvements to completion through the teams that own them. They treat developer experience as a product, with users, a roadmap, and measurable outcomes, and act as a force multiplier for every engineer at Index.
This position reports directly to VP of Quality and Delivery based in Bangalore and will work closely with members of the Quality and Delivery team.
Here’s what you’ll be doing:
- Setting the technical vision and multi-quarter strategy for developer experience across the engineering organization
- Lead a cross-team program that surfaces the friction slowing engineers down, routes each improvement to the team that owns it, and tracks it on a shared, prioritized roadmap
- Drive measurable improvements to how Engineers build software at Index Exchange
- Design, build, and evolve developer tools and platforms
- Define and champion engineering standards and best practices
- Mentor senior engineers and coach the engineers who advocate for developer experience within their teams, multiplying your impact through others
- Work on cutting-edge programmatic ad tech systems that handle hundreds of billions of transactions every day
Here's what you need:
- Expertise with Python and/or Go and their surrounding ecosystems of tools, libraries, and best practices.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience designing and operating CI/CD pipelines used by multiple teams and products.
- A track record of organization-level or multi-team technical impact — setting direction and driving initiatives to completion across teams.
- Experience building and delivering multi-quarter technical roadmaps.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and influencing skills — able to build alignment among engineers and senior or skeptical stakeholders, and to navigate trade-offs and negotiation toward durable outcomes
- A strong foundation in end-to-end web applications and microservices — architecting, coding, debugging, optimizing/refactoring, automated testing, and deploying APIs — and a bar for modular, extensible, reusable, maintainable, performant, and testable code
- Solid computer science and engineering fundamentals: algorithms, design patterns, and software architecture.
- You are team-oriented, you embrace change, and you help others do the same.

- GitLab-specific CI/CD experience.
- Experience building a developer portal used across an engineering organization.
- Experience measuring and reasoning about developer productivity or developer experience.
- Experience with programmatic ad tech, or other high-scale, high-throughput distributed systems.
