Sr Project Engineer (Onsite - Acton, MA)

Job Summary

The Sr Supplier Project Engineer is a key member of the Supplier Engineering group within Insulet's Supply Chain organization. Insulet manages a global supply chain and sources precision components and commodities from around the world for use in its medical devices. In this role, you will partner closely with colleagues and leaders across Quality, Sourcing, R&D and Manufacturing to plan and implement prototype and capital tooling and equipment at our suppliers, drive new product introductions, deliver improvement projects, resolve business-critical technical issues, and lead corrective actions in response to quality concerns across the supply base.
This is a highly visible, cross-functional role for an engineer who is as comfortable on the factory floors, office environments, and supplier locations. Success depends on a solid understanding of product performance with respect to measurement and tolerance, materials and material compatibility, and part and process risk mitigation. The ideal candidate brings project management experience leading cross-functional teams, a strong quality background, and either deep mechanical and automation expertise or strong process and data analysis capability. Experience with suppliers of custom precision components for medical devices, along with Six Sigma or Lean training, is a distinct advantage.
You will influence supplier personnel at every level, from shop floor operators to executive leadership, across Manufacturing, R&D, Quality and Automation, as well as the broader network of partners Insulet does business with.



Key Responsibilities

• Lead, plan and implement supplier capital and tooling qualifications from project kick-off through implementation into full production.
• Own project schedules and assigned budgets, and report status, risks and mitigation plans clearly to stakeholders and leadership.
• Partner with cross-functional teams across R&D, Quality, Automation and Manufacturing to deliver design-for-manufacturability analysis and support.
• Author or review supplier validation and qualification protocols, and coordinate their execution, data analysis and final reporting.
• Lead teams responsible for the procurement, installation and start-up of manufacturing equipment at global suppliers.
• Evaluate and manage prototype suppliers, place purchase orders and manage part deliveries against program timelines.
• Investigate supplier quality issues and lead corrective and preventive actions to closure, applying structured part and process risk mitigation.
• Work effectively in a borderless organization, driving results with teams spanning programs, engineering, purchasing and the supply base.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Plastics, Mechanical, Biomedical, Manufacturing or Industrial) or a related field.
• Five to seven years of experience working directly with manufacturing processes such as assembly, automation, molding, stamping, electronics or machining.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple supplier tooling projects from concept to production, including authoring and overseeing IQ, OQ and PQ protocols for component manufacturing processes and secondary operations.
• Working expertise in PFMEA, control plans and Measurement System Analysis.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to influence without direct authority.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience inside a direct material supplier as an engineer or project manager.
• Experience in a regulated industry, ideally medical devices.
• Six Sigma or Lean process improvement experience or certification.
• PMI project management certification.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and project management tools such as Smartsheet or Excel.

Travel and Physical Requirements

This position requires travel to supplier sites approximately 10 to 15 percent of the time, concentrated around critical project activities such as prototype builds, tooling trials, equipment installation and qualification runs.
