Shape the Future of Lancashire's Highway Network.

Lancashire County Council is one of the largest local authorities in England, serving a diverse and growing county. As both the Highway Authority and Traffic Authority, we play a key role in ensuring that new developments are supported by safe, sustainable and well-designed highway infrastructure.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Engineer to join our Development Control Team, helping to deliver highway improvements associated with new developments across Lancashire.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a wide variety of residential development and highway infrastructure projects, helping to ensure that new roads, junctions and highway improvements are designed and delivered to the standards expected by Lancashire County Council.

    About the Role

As an Assistant Engineer within our Section 38/278 team, you will manage and support the delivery of highway works associated with development proposals and oversee the adoption of new highways.

    Your responsibilities will include:

    • Managing Section 38 and Section 278 agreements.
    • Assessing highway design submissions and technical information.
    • Liaising with developers, consultants, contractors and internal stakeholders.
    • Monitoring and supervising highway construction works on site.
    • Supporting the delivery of safe, sustainable and high-quality highway infrastructure.
    • Helping to ensure developments meet county standards and are delivered efficiently.

No two days are the same and you will have the opportunity to work on a range of projects that directly contribute to the growth and development of Lancashire.

    Job Description & Person Specification

    About You

We are looking for someone who:

    • Has experience or knowledge of highway engineering, civil engineering or development-related infrastructure.
    • Can interpret technical drawings and engineering information.
    • Communicates confidently with a range of stakeholders.
    • Is organised, proactive and able to manage competing priorities.
    • Enjoys problem-solving and working collaboratively within a team.
    • Is keen to develop their technical knowledge and professional skills.

Whether you already have experience of Section 38 and Section 278 processes or are looking to build upon a broader engineering background, we would welcome applications from individuals with the right skills, attitude and commitment to learning.

    Working for Lancashire County Council

You will join a supportive and experienced team that is committed to sharing knowledge, encouraging professional development and helping colleagues reach their full potential.

We recognise the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance and offer flexible and hybrid working arrangements to support our employees.

The successful candidate will primarily support developments within Chorley, Fylde, Preston, South Ribble, West Lancashire and Wyre.

A valid driving licence is required, and you will be expected to have access to a vehicle for business travel. All approved business mileage and travel expenses will be reimbursed.
