LEGACY EARLY COLLEGE OVERVIEW
Legacy Early College is a K4-12 public charter school that originated through the vision of businessman William Brown in 2009, with an unwavering focus on “To and Through College” at every grade level. Legacy’s model combines academics, nutrition, physical fitness, and mental health. In addition to our college-driven academic standards, meals are made on site, scholars participate in PE every day, and Social-Emotional Literacy is integrated into the culture and curriculum.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Bus Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring scholars' safety, well-being, and positive behavior while in transit to and from school, educational field trips, and school-sponsored events. Working closely with the Bus Driver, the Bus Assistant maintains a secure and orderly environment on the vehicle, assists scholars with boarding and exiting, and provides dedicated support to students with special needs or physical accommodations. Serving as a positive representative of Legacy Early College, this role helps foster a safe, supportive, and respectful atmosphere during student transportation.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties
- The safety and behavior of the scholars must be a top priority ( Eyes on the kids at all times)
- Witness to all interactions with parents
- NO Constant cell phone use (Talking, texting, or social media)
- Help driver sweep & keep bus clean
- Document & report to the bus driver and Supervisor any damages to the inside of the bus (holes, writing on seats, or anything unsafe )
- All policies and procedures that are implemented inside our school also need to be enforced on the bus
- NO touching of any scholar at any time is allowed
- Refrain from using harsh language with scholars. Use other ways to ask them to quiet down
- NO EATING ON THE BUS
- ENFORCE the bus rules at all times for the safety of our scholars
- Do not let scholars, 3rd grade or younger, off without older siblings or a parent at the bus stop
- During emergencies, at the direction of the bus driver, assist with evacuation
- Bus assistants are to sit midway on the bus so that they can get to whatever is going on at the time correction of behavior is needed
- Check the bus for any scholars that might be asleep. There should be NO ONE LEFT ON A BUS AT ANY TIME
- Attend all meetings held for transportation
- Bus assistants must also not eat or sleep while on the bus. They must follow the same rules to keep the bus ride safe at all times
- Bus assistants must be able to help a sub driver with the route when needed
- ALL Bus Assistants are used as floaters. You may be asked to ride on a different bus at any time. Bus Assistants DO NOT have one bus assigned to them
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED: Minimum educational requirement to ensure strong fundamental reading, writing, and communication skills.
- Experience with Children: Prior experience working with K–12 students in a school, childcare, youth program, or bus monitor setting.
- CPR and First Aid Certification: Current certification (or willingness to obtain certification upon hire) to handle medical emergencies or student wellness needs on the bus.
- Special Needs & Behavior Management Skills: Experience or training in managing student behavior, supporting scholars with physical or developmental disabilities, and applying positive reinforcement strategies.
- Clean Background Check & Clearances: Ability to successfully pass SCDE/state-mandated criminal background checks, child abuse clearances, and drug screenings.
- Communication & De-escalation Abilities: Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with bus drivers, school administrators, students, and parents, along with the ability to de-escalate minor student conflicts.
- Physical Capability: Ability to assist students with boarding/exiting, secure wheelchairs or adaptive safety equipment, and assist with emergency bus evacuations if needed.
Work Schedule
Bus assistants will follow the centralized Legacy Early College central office calendar on the 180-day schedule.

The position will have periods of extended workweek hours, which are required to support both the ongoing development of the region and the delivery of high-quality education for all students.
