    What You Will Do
    The Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library (https://researchlibrary.lanl.gov) seeks a Software Development post-Bachelors Student to help imagine, create, and sustain its digital services. We support the Laboratory's paramount mission to solve national security challenges through scientific excellence by delivering essential knowledge services. The durable value of these services depends on a foundation of effective and efficient software infrastructure. This position will work on a variety of projects supporting the management, curation, discovery, dissemination, and preservation of institutional scientific content.
    Reporting to the Team Leader for Institutional Scientific Content (ISC), this developer will join an experienced group of software developers, library professionals, project managers, and system administrators. We offer a creative setting in which information technologies and services are applied to scientific productivity. We aggressively pursue new ideas, services, products, and approaches to satisfy research needs. The successful candidate should be a versatile individual who works collaboratively, embraces learning, and has a strong user focus.

    Core Responsibilities
    • Uses software development methodologies, tools, and processes, including source code control and database design, to build applications to meet technical and functional requirements.
    • Work with team members and stakeholders to evaluate system needs, participate in project planning, and deploy effective software solutions in an Agile framework.
    • Collaborate and communicate across domains, program areas, and Laboratory groups to better support critical Laboratory infrastructure and workflows.

    What You Need
    Minimum Job Requirements:
    • Understanding of software development methodologies, tools, and processes, including source code control and team collaboration tools.
    • Demonstrated experience with programming, scripting, and markup languages such as PHP, Python, or Java.
    • Knowledge of database systems such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
    • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other modern web development tools.
    • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
    • Ability to learn and apply new technologies and processes. An openness to suggesting and adopting new approaches to improve work effectiveness and efficiency.
    Desired Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of modern web application frameworks.
    • Knowledge of web services and REST APIs.
    • Knowledge of database ORM frameworks.
    • Experience working with structured, semi-structured, and/or unstructured data.
    Education
    • Must have earned a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (or international equivalent) within the last 3 years in an appropriate field (Computer Science, Data Science, Information Science, etc.)
    • Must have graduated with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
    Work Environment:
    Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
    Work Schedule
    Onsite / Hybrid: This position is located in Los Alamos, NM with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be regularly required. Hybrid is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice. Some interns may work a 9/80 schedule at the discretion of management and in accordance with the Student Programs Office guidebook.

    Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
    The LANL Research Library advances discovery science in support of the Lab mission to solve national security challenges through scientific excellence. Staff members work closely with colleagues within and across teams.     Additional Details
    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
    No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

    New-Employment Drug Test:
    The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
    Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
