    The Systemwide Critical Care Lead Director provides unified leadership for critical care services across Cone Health, aligning ICU operations, quality, safety, and workforce strategies under a cohesive vision. This physician leader combines bedside care with executive clinical leadership, serving as the strategic and operational lead across a multidisciplinary service line. The role is responsible for building high-functioning ICU teams, standardizing models of care, elevating performance metrics towards top decile performance, and optimizing system-wide critical care delivery for superior patient experience and outcomes. Provider engagement and experience will be enhanced through an environment of safety for all team members.

    Strategic Leadership.
    • Strategic planning for ICU services for the next 5-10 years.
    • Forge collaborative and accountable relationships with systemwide leaders and stakeholders with common goals and potentially competing priorities.
    • Help develop and execute Critical Care Service Line Agreements (SLAs) with the Emergency Rooms, Anesthesia, Interventional Radiology, Triad Hospitalists, Rehabilitative Services, Internal Medicine Teaching Service, Family Medicine teaching Service, General Surgery, and Trauma.
    • Provide national presence for Cone Health nationally through the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), recruitment, and collaboration with Risant and Kaiser facilities.
    • Facilitate program development and growth for CVICU, Neurosciences and other specialized services that need ICU level of care.
    Clinical and Operational Excellence.
    • Utilize evidence-based guidelines and protocols along with ICU standard work models to provide the highest level of care for our ICUs.
    • Work with CCC and CCM to coordinate ICU placement and care systemwide.
    • Oversee and coordinate intensivist care at Alamance Regional Medical Center, Annie Penn Hospital, Wesley Long Hospital, Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, and eICU through direct collaboration with local clinical directors.
    • Participate in ICU provider recruitment, onboarding, and scheduling
    Team & Talent Leadership.
    • Develop Dyad partnership with market CNO/ACNO.
    • Work with Chief Academic Officer to enhance the internal medicine and family medicine residents’ rotational value and experience.
    • Mentor ICU developing leaders.
    • Create inclusive, high-performance cultures with emphasis on mutual respect, collaboration, and innovation.
    • Serve on the Medical Director Council and collaborate with the Executive.
    • Champion ICU quality improvement initiatives across Cone Health.
    • Assist with the design of systemwide Order Sets.
    • Monitor and improve ICU performance metrics.
    • Promote patient-centered care that is seamless, compassionate, and equitable
    Compliance & Risk.
    • Ensure ICU compliance with regulatory standards and payer credentialing requirements.
    • Work with risk management to decrease serious safety events
    Innovation & Future Planning.
    • Support closed ICU model rollouts as appropriate at MCH and ARMC.
    • Work with respiratory therapy department to develop autonomous RT protocols.
    • Help build a new ICU billing educational program.
    • Integrate ICU physicians into system-wide workflows (e.g., CareLink, rapid response, IMTS curriculum).
    • Guide ICU design strategy for surge flex units and throughput optimization.
    • Clinical 0.70 FTE. Administrative 0.30 FTE.
    Qualifications.
    • Board Certification in Critical Care Medicine.
    • Minimum 5 years of ICU leadership experience.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in performance improvement, staffing models, and ICU operations.
    • High-level communication, team building, and conflict resolution skills.
    • Proficiency in healthcare analytics and performance metrics (e.g., KPIs, ICU LOS, HAI).

    Essential Job Function

    • Education/Training: Utilizes literature and attends regional and national meetings remain current and professionally competent.
    • Participates inpatient, staff, and professional education programs.
    • Participates in educational and research programs including didactic material, formal teaching conferences, clinical teaching, staff education conferences, and clinical research.
    • Liaison: Participates in liaison duties with the other professional staff, and in development of patient referral sources.
    • Keeps referring physicians informed of care and outcomes.
    • Patient Care; Provides direct and indirect patient care the assigned areas.
    • Provides medical supervision of the interdisciplinary team and supervises residents and medical students in all aspects of their assigned duties.
    • Participates in clinical research projects of interest.
    • Provides accurate and timely documentation and sign off of care establish up-to-date medical records for billing purposes.
    • Professional Standards: Models and upholds the professional standards of MCHS including the Medical Staff By-Laws, Service Excellence commitments, practice standards, physician expectations and professional image standards.
    • Acts in concert with MCHS Mission, Visio, and Values.
    • Demonstrates collegial and respectful relationships with colleagues, patients, associates, family, and visitors.
    • Upholds Socratic Oath, honors patient confidentiality, and acts with integrity at all times.
    • Works in alignment and contributes towards achieving the goals and standards of MCHS.
    • Quality and Safety: Participates, as needed, in medical audits, quality improvement programs, investigations, peer review, and other inquiries relating the standards of professional care.
    • Provides medical supervision and leadership the interdisciplinary team achieve the maximum benefit for each patient.
    • Ensures safe practice standards and regulatory compliance.
    • Quality Improvement: Engages in continuous improvements and use of evidence-based practices working towards preeminent healthcare and service (with outcomes moving in the 90th percentile or above).
    • Maintain records in accordance with the policies of MCHS, applicable laws and regulations.
    • participates in development of clinical guidelines, procedures, programs, and makes recommendations improve quality and efficiency of care.
    • Shares specifically designated on-call responsibilities with other physician members of the assigned areas.

    Education

    • Required: Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from a Medical School recognized by the North Carolina Medical Board.
    • Also, medical degrees from other countries that are equivalent to the United States MD or DO degrees from a Medical School recognized by the North Carolina Medical Board.

    Experience

    • Licensure/Certification/Listing

    • REQUIRED: EXPERIENCED clinically/administratively in a system-wide accredited program.
    • Practitioner must have completed the number of years in a residency program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and met all other requirements for eligibility to receive board certification recognized by either the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Association in the primary medical specialty (or subspecialty) for which the Practitioner is applying for Clinical Privileges. If five (5) or more years have elapsed since the Practitioner completed such residency program, the Practitioner currently must have board-certification recognized by either the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Association in such specialty (or subspecialty). Fully licensed to practice Medicine in the state of NC. Meets requirements of the Moses Cone Health System Medical Staff by-laws and obtains the appropriate level of medical staff privileges. The Practitioner must have a current, and valid DEA registration number, with no involuntary limitations on prescriptive authority (schedule limitations) resulting from DEA disciplinary actions.
