The Estimator (Crane Components & Parts) develops accurate and timely quotations for replacement crane components, spare parts, assemblies, and related equipment. This position is responsible for researching historical project records, ERP systems, engineering drawings, manufacturing documentation, vendor resources, and network databases to identify existing equipment and determine the correct replacement parts and assemblies. The role works closely with Sales, Production, Engineering, Purchasing, and Estimating to provide technically accurate, timely, and competitive quotations.
Essential Functions / Job Duties
Parts Identification & Pricing
- Research customer equipment records, historical jobs, ERP systems, network folders, drawings, and bills of material to identify replacement components.
- Locate and verify part numbers, assembly numbers, revision levels, and engineering documentation.
- Develop quotations for replacement parts, assemblies, hoists, end trucks, controls, electrification, brakes, motors, gearboxes, wheels, hooks, wire rope, and related crane components.
- Interpret customer photographs, field inspection reports, drawings, and equipment data to determine replacement requirements.
- Work with vendors to obtain current pricing, lead times, and technical information.
- Recommend equivalent or upgraded replacement components when original equipment is obsolete.
Estimating & Proposal Development
- Prepare accurate cost estimates and quotations for spare parts, assemblies, and component replacements.
- Develop scope descriptions, clarifications, assumptions, and exclusions.
- Review labor requirements associated with assembly replacement, installation support, startup, and commissioning activities.
- Support sales personnel with technical pricing information and budgetary quotations.
- Maintain consistency of estimate structure, documentation, and pricing methodology.
Technical Responsibilities
- Interpret crane GA drawings, fabrication drawings, electrical schematics, BOMs, and engineering documentation.
- Identify crane components and assemblies from drawings and historical records.
- Understand crane mechanical, structural, and electrical systems, including hoists, trolleys, drives, brakes, controls, electrification systems, and runway components.
- Coordinate with engineering regarding replacement design requirements, obsolescence issues, and compatibility concerns.
- Assist in identifying opportunities for modernization or reliability improvements.
Interdepartmental Coordination
- Work closely with Engineering to identify replacement designs and verify component selections.
- Coordinate with Production regarding manufacturability, fabrication requirements, assembly labor, and shop capacity.
- Support Purchasing in sourcing components and obtaining competitive vendor quotations.
- Collaborate with Estimating and Sales personnel to ensure accurate and timely customer responses.
- Participate in project handoffs and communicate scope clearly to all stakeholders.
Data Management & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain organized quote records and supporting documentation.
- Assist in developing and maintaining parts databases, pricing libraries, historical estimate records, and standard assemblies.
- Identify opportunities to improve ERP data accuracy and parts lookup processes.
- Participate in ongoing training and continuous improvement initiatives.
Preferred Candidate Background Candidates with experience in any of the following areas are highly desirable:
- Overhead crane service and inspections.
- Crane parts sales.
- Industrial maintenance.
- Hoist and crane modernization.
- Technical inside sales.
- ERP and Bill of Material management.
Education
- Required: High School Diploma or GED.
- Preferred: Degree in Business, Engineering, Project Management, Operations Management, or related discipline.
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 3 years of experience in crane service, crane estimating, industrial equipment estimating, parts sales, manufacturing, or related field.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to identify industrial equipment components.
- Experience navigating ERP systems, databases, network storage systems, and historical project records.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, BOMs, manuals, electrical schematics, and technical documents.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, PDFs, and electronic drawing viewers.
- Excellent organizational, research, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple quote requests and priorities simultaneously.
- Preferred experience with overhead cranes, hoists, crane modernization projects, industrial maintenance, OSHA, ASME, CMAA, and material handling equipment.
- Experience with CAD/eDrawings or similar drawing-viewing software preferred.
